They are just prepping everyone. Even finding bacteria on another planet will rustle feathers.

Would have no effect on Christianity whatsoever.

When I was younger, mind you this was in the 90s, I asked my parish priest what we would do if we found aliens. He said "Go out and convert them, and teach them the Lord's Word"

The agency is hiring 24 theologians to take part in its program at the Center for Theological Inquiry (CTI) at Princeton University in New Jersey, which NASA gave a $1.1 million grant to in 2014.

Of this grant, 400k is left to offer as fees after 7 years of catered lunches to decided who is on the team and what are the parameters of the study.

Why do people always assume any other intelligent life out there would be more advanced than us?

Initial mass panic followed by slow acceptance.

that'll be 1.1 million dollars.

No it doesn't: it simply lists it first.

The program aims to answer questions that have baffled us since the begging of time such as what is life? What does it mean to be alive? Where do we draw the line between the human and the alien? What are the possibilities for sentient life in other places?

One of these answers is undoubtedly 42.

Discovering rudimentary life on other planets would be a major scientific milestone but probably wouldn’t affect the religious community that much. Humans simply aren’t ready to let go of religion in 2021 and some microbes aren’t going to change that.

Theists will just adjust to being a little less special, like with heliocentrism, evolution, etc.

And you know this how?? The aliens you’ve met told you this?? Or oh oh I got it. The movies you’ve watched told you.

What’s the budget on this thing and who is receiving an honorarium for partaking in this grift? That should be the real story.

Just “discovering” an alien species via telescope is more of a middle ground. With that said, when people talk about alien contact being problematic, it’s generally in the context of actual contact, particularly of us being the ones contacted. In that scenario, considering we would be faced with an alien race we didn’t know existed, and they had the ability to physically reach our world, they would be by definition more advanced than we are.

I really don't understand why this would be an issue for Christianity. Why can't God have created other forms of life elsewhere in the universe along with their own unique forms of salvation? He's God.

I’d imagine once we detect heat signatures and or atmospheres of distant worlds, then will be on the countdown clock. One you know there is a possibility of an outside threat we will have to get advanced quick. That means everybody has to be on board. If your religion or nation is in the way then that will have to be dealt with quickly.

He could. With that said, depending on the flavor of Christianity, it might conflict with the “universality” of the message and the “cosmic scope” of the “battle”, etc. Some Christians would take it in stride. Some would have serious issues.

Everyone needs to read the Hyperion book series. This is all explained. This is all leading us to the Shrike.

We will know there is advanced life on other planets for hundreds, possibly thousands of years before any actual contact.

It'll be a long long long time, if ever, before we developed technology to travel those kinds of distances.

But things like the Webb Telescope, and whatever we come up with over the next 100 years, will be able to tell us if there is advanced life on other worlds.

We just won't be able to get to them.

So humanity will have the knowledge for a LONG time before any actual contact.
