WAS. The retail theft, muggings, car jackings, and L train violence have crept a lot more into the nicer areas. That’s not to say neighborhoods like Lincoln Park or Lakeview are dangerous, but it’s worse than 5 years ago.

San Fransisco is arguably the most beautiful city in the US.
I took a bicycle ride through Golden Gate State Park, and then up the pacific hwy, then over the Golden Gate Bridge in the 90s. Absolutely gorgeous!

but honest question, is there a single major-ish city that is as safe or safer than it was 5 years ago?

Lot of things can change in 30 years. Probably not safe to ride a bicycle in parts of those same areas this day and age.

Portland, OR. Wife and I love it there. Asked her to marry me there. It’s a beer lover’s wet dream and it’s filled with great food and a unique vibe. Plus it’s nestled amongst some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. You just need to be smart about where you go within the city, but that’s no different than any other large city.

I think Boston is although there may have been a spike since covid

New Orleans would be better off without Baton Rouge and Baton Rouge would be better off without New Orleans. Lafayette would be better off with out both.

Washington DC: A lot of people dislike it because they don't like how big the federal government is. Others think about the crime and corruption in the 80's and 90's.
In my experience, It is an awesome city. One of the top 2 cities in the US for museums. Beautiful architecture. Great food. Vibrant night life. All the big city amenities like pro sports. Decent weather too, four seasons, but neither winters nor summers are awful.

I loved Portland when I went. I saw the obvious problems with it but it’s a cool city

Kinda yea but their tent cities spread out a bit. I spent a lot of time in Vancouver, Wa when I was there and there were tents next to the interstate there

San Antonio - underrated topography, bearable traffic (two loops and no tolls), laid-back culture, and relatively low violent-crime
I strongly agree.
I appreciate Fort Worth too. It is relatively unknown and misunderstood compared to Houston, Dallas, and Austin. A common criticism is that it is too slow, i.e. not busy or offering as much urban thrills. However, it has more beautiful sights and areas than Dallas. Eagle Mountain Park and the Fort Worth Nature Center are both excellent places to hike and enjoy nature. Deer are a common sight at these preserves, and the people have been friendlier than walkers/hikers in Dallas area parks and preserves.
The Fort Worth stockyards were a cool experience, and I liked the zoo and botanical gardens. The city borders Arlington, which features Six Flags over Texas, the Dallas Cowboys stadium, and the Dallas Rangers stadium.

I love Detroit. Greektown has nice bars, casinos, restaurants, and sport venues all blocks away from each other. I was shocked when I visited.
Unfortunately, the surrounding area is exactly what Detroit has a bad reputation for

I agree. But the secret is out in Fort Worth unfortunately. Not sure how long it can refrain from being Dallas-lite.

I had a ton of fun in Madison, WI for a class I went to. It was on campus so that may have had something to do with it.
As others have said, I always enjoy when we visit San Antonio.
Lastly, and unexpected as a I have a disdain for their sports teams, but downtown Atlanta was fun when I went. It was clean, it felt safe to walk around and GA Tech has a fabulous campus there.

You can make a small case for Memphis BUT……Baton Rouge being under appreciated?!? Lol
This is golden!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BTR is a corrupt shathole with some of the worst traffic in the nation. I try to avoid like the plague. I know this cause I live outside Shreveport, which is a slightly smaller shathole but with much better infrastructure.
