I always thought Memphis was more comparable to new orleans.

You're likely to be on an episode of First 48 in either city

Name a city that you appreciate that others tend to look down on...
1. Baton Rouge(my home town)
2. New Orleans. I had a great time at Mardi Gras yesterday. I'm very grateful to live right under an hour from Jackson Square.
3. San Antonio. I love that city. It's a lot nicer than the OT will admit.

I've never been to Baltimore but I imagine it being very much like N.O. After I watched the Wire I thought to myself "Yep all this definitely happens in N.O." New Orleans has an added layer of color, culture influence, and appreciation for arts.

Baton Rouge and Chicago are my picks
There are pockets of great things about both.

Chicago is a pretty cool city in the non crime areas. People are better than northeastern cities and like you said great food. Also the women in my experience are very willing there

This Memphis talk makes me want BBQ.
Used to live there and I miss it.

Not BBQ but the Flight in Memphis is freaking awesome.

People always seem to talk down about Jacksonville but I loved my time there. Lived close to the beaches (nice surf compared to the Gulf side), weather not too bad in the summer with a daily sea breeze, and great places to visit within a few hours drive (e.g., Savannah/Charleston/St. Simons Island). I guess Jacksonville has finally been discovered because of the growth there...

Des Moines. It gets a "boring Midwest" stereotype but it was honestly more fun than a lot of Southern cities I've been to in terms of nightlife, restaurants, and attractions. On top of that, it has a really good school system, an extremely low crime rate for a large metro area, parks, and healthcare. I would move there if I had any family connection and the winters weren't so harsh.

I think Transylvania is wonderful this time of year.
Not to mention their water tower is cool.

quote:I live in Chicago and love it. Certain areas aside, as you mentioned, it is the best city in the country for 3 months of the year.
Chicago my favorite large city in the country.
The food is really good, the summer weather is incredible, and the people aren't quite as prickly as their counterparts in Boston or Philadelphia
The city I appreciate that others might not is Milwaukee. My BiL lives downtown and we visit frequently. We all call it "Chicago without people". Very similar vibe on a much smaller scale; Lakefront, riverfront, great food and beer scene, some very cool trendy areas, but hardly anyone around while walking about, unlike Chicago, and the people that are lean more towards "Wisconsin nice" than those in Chicago.
I don't know that I would want to live there, I am a snooty Chicagoan that has always looked down on Milwaukee, but it is a great place and I love going up there every other month or so.
