Those still have to be read by a meter reader with a remote that’s in range of your meter.
These appear to be able to send the meter usage data directly to Entergy.

Yes, I'm sure the Entergy lobbying department has a blow job party boat offshore for all the people in charge of approving their measures. I bet those officials' families are quite well taken care of.

If you want to bitch about the system, fine. But this isn't one of those times. Entergy is in all 3 phases of the energy market: wholesale, transmission, and distribution. Their infrastructure overall is shite mainly due to a regulated entity that still has a stock ticker. Houston started the smart meters in 2009 and the plan was to charge each electric provider $3.24 monthly for each household. The provider would raise rates a little to accommodate that for the customer. The $3.24 amount was reduced to $3.05 for 12 years. TX applied for a smart meter grant from DC and was awarded the money. As a result they dropped the $3.05 charge from 12 years to six years.
So as of 2015 all the 2.5 million smart meters in Houston were paid for. There is no charge now and they are building like crazy and no new charge for each new meter installed.
Has Entergy applied for any federal funds to offset the cost like TX did?

Good. It will keep the meter readers from casing my property and everything on it while they take 15 - 20 minutes to "read" my meter.

LNOMM34 it cost Centerpoint in Houston $750 Million to install 2.3 M smart meters in 2009.
They applied for the grant and was awarded so only had to charge the customer the $3 fee for 6 years. Maybe Entergy will do the same and end up cancelling the fee.
