Charleston, SC (WLTX) - A former South Carolina police officer will spend 20-years in prison for shooting and killing an unarmed man in North Charleston, a case that drew international attention and sparked a debate about the use of force by law enforcement.

U.S. District Court Judge David Norton handed down the sentence Thursday against Michael Slager for the death of Walter Scott. The decision followed a four-day hearing where prosecutors and defense attorneys made their final push for either harsh punishment or leniency for the former patrolman.

I'm guessing he'll be kept in solitary for his safety.

What a stupid stupid thing for him to do. What was his reasoning for doing so in the first place? He panicked or what?

I was wondering what happened to this guy. I thought it was ridiculous there was riots in Baltimore and Ferguson but no riot over this case?

I'm curios. It is ridiculously expensive to keep someone in solitary. Would it be cheaper to build a prison for former cops?

I'm guessing it would have to be a federal prison that cops from all over the country could be housed.

20 yrs in prison

This seems kind of soft.

Would Walter Scott have been sentenced to 20 years if he had shot the officer in the back?

Correct verdict and sentence. I would have been okay with a longer one.

This was the one case that was blatant murder. Dude should've been sentence a lot more time.

What is interesting here is that he will never be convicted of murder.

He plead guilty to violating Scott's civil rights in federal court.

The state murder case ended in a hung jury, and the state dropped the charges as part of the federal plea agreement.
