This has been discussed ad infinitum on these very boards, and it typically devolves, quickly.

The main reason why Boomers receive such animosity from younger generations is largely because the world Boomers had vs the worlds that Xers, Millennials, and Zoomers have, are fundamentally different, and the rules are entirely rewritten. When younger generations call this out, and say that the game's rules are rewritten on the fly (largely at Xers/Millennials' expense), Boomers tend to say that younger generations just don't work hard enough, or something about avocado toast.

And it falls apart from there, and degenerates into name calling, etc.

I think there would greater cooperation and mutual care for each other if Boomers had some level of understanding for the current world, and if Xers/Millennials released some envy and frustration to the older cohort. Both sides have something to learn from each other.

You're correctly illuminating the fact the world has changed a TON over the relevant course of time which covers this topic.

Did they send you to college? Did they put food on the table, roof over your head, etc.? Are you a productive member of society? If so, you Momma and Daddy did their job at least in terms of providing for you. Now, if they were assholes to you, then obviously that changes things.

My parents were Silent Gen and my grandparents were Greatest Gen. You described them in the OP. Boomers are all just former dirty hippies.

I think most people are just making observations and commenting on those observations

So just stiff upper lip it and it'll all go away. The cost of living, the restrictions that reduce affordable housing, the economy as a whole, etc.

What can you actually do about it? Other than bitch, NOTHING. Vote for people that you hope can change it, other than that, stop wasting time concerning yourselves with perceived slights from others.

Thanks for meeting the stereotype that we're discussing in this thread.

What's the stereotype? That i don't blame groups of people for what i am or am not able to do? I'm in my 40s. I don't spend time thinking about how Group A has X, therefore i can't have Y. I worry about my family, and focus on doing my job the best i can do. And i teach my kids, that spending time making excuses will get you NOWHERE. Blaming others will get you NOWHERE. The only thing in your life you can control is yourself. Better yourself and you will be fine in the long run.

This is the effect of boomer leadership for the past 30 years.

Then why did the majority of the younger generations want another boomer (Bernie Sanders) in 2016 and 2020?

Yep...everyone will just pretend Gen-X doesn't even exist. Even when it comes to getting blamed for stuff, they get overlooked.

People like to criticize/blame those who have succeeded trough hard work and financial discipline. Those who go through life blaming others for their own shortcomings do not deserve any sympathy. That does not mean that college, gas, food, and housing costs aren't out of control. They are. But that isn't the fault of Boomers in general. That blame is misplaced and should be placed on the boomers in DC. Unfortunately you have hypocritical self centered idiots like Jill Filipovic who live to blame an entire generation for their own inadequacies.

I actually don't blame the entire Boomer generation. Nor do I blame anyone else for my own shortcomings. But there should be a realization that economically things have shifted. Even in the scenario you laid out in your life. For example, you attended college before costs became astronomical and your wife escaped extreme poverty via an athletic scholarship. Those combined are strikingly different for two 18 year olds today if they were to attend college.

Honestly, if the Boomer generation would just realize and acknowledge the differences economically today I'd be okay.

Would never happen.

Would require that they acknowledge that it might be harder now.

That would “diminish” how they view their formative years.

All of this. I made sure that I would not have to depend on the Government to live my life. That does not mean that I am willing to just give money back to the government to subsidize some welfare program.

I wanted SS ended in 1986 when I graduated from college and started my career. Of course, that didn’t happen so I was forced to pay into SS. I want the money I paid in to reinvest so my girls and grandchildren are even better off financially.

I think this is true for most.

They get hate for not even acknowledging objective facts.

My thoughts on why there are so few single earner households is that it's not seen as "normal". My daughter and son in law both grew up in single earner homes, so it wasn't strange or scary for them to do the same.

My wife and I both grew up with stay-at-home moms and professional dads. So did most of the working couples we socialize with. It wouldn't be "scary" or "strange" for us to do that. It's just not possible right now.

You should give all of that money to your children.

It is, in fact, their money anyway.

What you paid in is long gone.

Any money you receive was taken from your children so that they could redistribute it to you.

Wrong. I never wanted to pay into SS to begin with but was forced to by the Government for over 30 years. So you can bet your Scuffy arse that I expect to use it. I earned the right to use it.

Of course, I wasn’t so stupid as to count on or rely on SS to live. We use investments for that. SS just helps put gas in the boat.

10/10 no notes - so perfect I thought it was a troll until I saw your profile. Anyone arguing for the boomers just hang your head in shame and leave the thread.

You think an 18 year old today could achieve the same? A cop salary supporting a stay at home wife and kids?

this is why they get insulted because they miss this. There is such a glaring gap on the cost of living between now and then. Back then it was pretty normal for a man to work a middle class job and support a family with a stay at home wife.

I am C-suite at my company, make 6 figures and while I have been able to handle the mortgage and a reasonable lifestyle (no crazy trips, sensible cars average outings) some months are tight with nothing left over especially if there was an unexpected expense. This kind of situation would have been unreal back then, but they will keep romanticizing the bootstrap theory and good honest hard work.

They have zero idea what child care costs are, costs to really anything that younger generations have. My folks went to college for a flat rate of about $400 a semester. Inflation adjusted, that's $3,100.

And why have college costs exploded? The main reason?

It's funny that most of what is blamed on another generation is actually government's doing. And the younger generations consistently vote for more more more.

High housing costs? Regulations.. taxes.. requirements. you see what a new HVAC unit costs nowadays? Wanna guess why they are so high?

High vehicle costs? Regulations.. taxes.. requirements. In the 80's and 90's you could buy basic vehicles that ran and lasted if you took care of them. And you could repair them. Now? 10,000 stupid emissions requirements, 50 airbags in a vehicle, gotta hit fuel standards requirements, have to use thin oils, hybrid crap, etc.

Appliances? Same. "Efficiency"

Fuel? Multiple taxes. Regulations.

And right down the line.
