Good for you, my grandads died when I 10 & 12. Never had a real relationship with either.
for reminding me

Your grandfather was in an interracial gay relationship? Very progressive of him!

Sounds like a good guy, but doesn't sound very industrious. Maybe that's why he was happy.

Grandma was a Razorback fan, stayed up late to listen to all their sports or to catch up on the latest Hog news. She would be up at 4a cooking breakfast. When I was there, I would get up with her, help out and then go with her when she did the chores and fed the animals. They had a sorghum mill for Molasses, cows, chicken houses, hogs, truck garden..
Ernie Ervin is my cousin. My uncles all played Div II football, aunt played basketball in college. Just an amazing family considering the tragedy and battles they had to face.

THIS.
Both of my grandfathers died in the flue epidemic of 1917-1918, about 20 years before I was born. (Epidemic; pandemic wasn't coined until much later.)

My paw paw was the same way. Everyone in town knew him and loved him. I still have never attended a funeral that I can recall having that many people at the service.
Also, you're right the things he could get done between 5:30AM and 9-10AM are baffling. I'm not even sure it is possible in today's world (unless you are a farmer and basically do your own work
).
He's been gone for nearly 30 yrs now and I still miss him and think about him as much today as I did the day after he passed away.

Your granddad sounds like a good and decent dude, but everything you posted sounds miserable

My paternal grandfather died in 1943. I would love to say it was a glorious sacrifice for his nation, but it was a bar fight in San Pedro, CA when his ship was in port.
My maternal grandfather died in 1958(?) from pancreatic cancer. He was only in his late 50s, I think.
So I don't have any memories, fond or otherwise, of my grand fathers.

My ex wifes grandfather was the greatest man I've ever known. Not writing a paragraph about him, but only had a 6th grade education and grew up in a house with a dirt floor. He's the wisest, kindest, most giving person Ive ever known. I am better for having known him.

Nice story. I seriously doubt you're "a soft entitled piece of crap" with someone like him having been in your life.

Hell, one thing I will always miss in life was knowing my real parents or grandparents. Blessed to have had adopted parents and at least one grandmother in my life though.
Cool Grandpa story..
Did get to recently meet my biological sister on the mom side and learned more about that grandfather. Found it all through Ancestry. Because of Christian persecution, his parents sent he and his brother from Syria at age 12 to the United States. Enlisted in the Army at age 16 or 17 during WW1. Lost his right arm during the Battle for St. Souplet in France. Won a Medal of Gallantry. Went on to be a successful business man opening up the first liquor store in the area after Prohibition.
Wished I'd known him.
