My mind is blown every time I read something a college student writes. I don't know what's going on, but grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, paper format, etc. are all complete garbage from 98% of students. I sometimes wonder how they made it past high school with such poor writing skills
Kids are texting/snap-chatting before they learn all the mechanics of writing. They're getting more "wrong" practice vs. older generations who didn't spend their free time forming sentences, and it's difficult to undo.

I have become very careless in my old age. I frequently type "their" for "there" and "here" for "hear" and I don't know why. I am also find myself leaving prepositions out of sentences when I type for some reason.

It drives me nuts when I see blatant errors. I feel like a grammar Nazi.

So which is it; bad writing or bad typing? There is a difference.

I saw someone say "it's bazaar" instead of "it's bizarre" in an MBA level class.

English skills are learned and rooted in high school.
The fact that you did decent in college means you didn’t have a good foundation going in.
I can still crap out a A+ paper and it’s been 15 years since I finished college.

My English skills have actually gotten much better with age. Online spelling and grammar is another story. Internet shorthand.

I rarely write anything.
Me too. The mindless typing proves many grammatical errors. Automatic spell check on my email solves this problem for me.

I was talking about this earlier with someone. I used to be fantastic at spelling but not so much anymore. I couldn’t spell “unconscious” to save my life earlier.

My new thesaurus is terrible. And not only that, it’s also terrible!

I have always blamed my Hispanic father for trying to force me to learn two languages as a toddler.
For someone currently learning and practicing a second language, I envy that you had this as an option. Italian has so many damn verbs that mean pretty much the same thing and tons of verbs require a preposition to precede it or follow the verb.

Apparently, your skills are not as bad as they could be or you would have typed, "My skills have went from bad to terrible."
I employ a few girls from rural areas to do some administrative work and they always use the word went in place of gone. It drives one of the older men in our group nuts.
