In college I made decent grades in my three mandatory English classes. However, I have noticed a drop in my writing(typing) skills the last few years. I, obviously, do not care enough on this website to do much proofreading, but at work I literally have to google things to make sure I'm using the correct format or spelling. Anyone else noticed a drop off after college?

Tldr: I'm stupid

My grammar/writing hasn’t gotten worse, but my handwriting has gone to shite. I rarely write anything. It feels super awkward now.

I'm the same way. I finished grad school in 02 and my writing and spelling skills have dropped off quite a bit in 15 years. I think technology like spell check, smartphones and the fact that I don't really write much anymore other than emails has contributed quite a bit.

Don't get me wrong, I had to put forth some effort to make a B in English. It's fairly pathetic.

I have always blamed my Hispanic father for trying to force me to learn two languages as a toddler. It's not a valid excuse because he stopped trying when I was young, and my problem is with writing not speaking, but I still use the excuse.

My grammar may have gone down a bit, but my typing has increased. I also have to write formally a hell of a lot more now than I did then.

Start caring.

This is a prime opportunity to practice your writing. Like most things in life, practice makes perfect (or at least competent).

My mind is blown every time I read something a college student writes. I don't know what's going on, but grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, paper format, etc. are all complete garbage from 98% of students. I sometimes wonder how they made it past high school with such poor writing skills
