What did he say about the colonizing patriarchy that ravaged native peoples? No wait, that’s 1st grade.

I don’t think people understand the level of death of destruction Western Europeans brought to the Western Hemisphere… genocide doesn’t begin to describe it. None of us would be here today if that didn’t happen, but it’s not something that should be celebrated.

By any measure, Columbus was a piece of shite… even judged by the savagery of the Middle Ages. He did very little (if any) good.

Columbus was an actual piece of shite, I’m surprised they’re still teaching about him in schools.

Y’all need to stop looking at historical figures through a 2023 lense.

Eh, he was a complex figure. He was even admonished in his day by people who thought that his treatment of the natives was harsh. That’s saying something.

Yea I mean Columbus sucked but he still did something important. Important people in history should be learned about even if they weren’t good people.

And as far as what good he did, he opened the “New World” to European colonization, whether you think that’s good or bad, it’s world changing.

And while European Exploration did lead to a 90% decrease in the population of Natives on the coast, it isn’t the Europeans fault that the vast majority of that population reduction was due to the Natives immune systems not being able to survive European diseases.

I guess it is technically their fault, but it’s not like they knew that was going to happen when they went there.

Overall I agree Columbus was bad even compared to his contemporaries, I mean he literally got arrested and banished for his mistreatment of his subjects in Hispaniola.

I still don’t think you can throw out that 90% stat as a catch all for all European colonists being bad, most of them were just coming over for a new life or economic opportunity, they weren’t trying to kill all the natives.

You mean more death and destruction than the natives were already wreaking on other natives? Sounds like you failed what few history courses you were ever exposed to.

I feel like the negative things about Columbus didn’t start being pushed until the 90s.

Basically that he genocided the Indians with disease. Even though the dude died young of illness too.
