However, he's 18. He's going to do it if he really wants it. My suggestion is to pay for classes from a professional. Even tell him to take the classes or ***insert whatever will work***. Tell him you love him and care about his safety.

Some people really suck as a parent. Or will, if they have that attitude. Sure an 18YO can do it “if he really wants to”. But he can also be told to do so somewhere else. As in, not under my roof. If he’s completely on his own- living on his own and fully financially independent, the world is his oyster. But if the parents are in any way assisting him, they have leverage. They just have to have the balls to use it.

Exactly why I will never get a bike. My brother had a Harley Heritage soft tail and rode all the time and tried to get me into it. I really wanted to get a bike but that is what kept me from pulling the trigger. I see too much stupid shite on the road to put myself on 2 wheels.

Terrible idea. Especially with today’s drivers. It’s not the bike that scares me, it’s the other idiots on the road.

I used to ride motorcyles, raced even.

I would not ride a bike today. Everyone, everyone has their phone in their hands with their head down. I'm constantly blowing my horn either at people fading into my lane from the opposite direction, or people sitting at lights clearly not watching the light.

Take him to a muscle car show and see if you can steer him elsewhere. Let him drive something loud and classic.

Guess your 18 year old son doesn’t realize you can’t trust other people on the road

Everyone I’ve known (and it’s been discussed) has been in an accident and gotten hurt much worse than if in a car. One guy wiped out on a small tree branch in the road.

Also people’s minds are trained to see cars as they turn left or right. The mind sees a motorcycle and says that’s not a car so GO! Same with night time and headlights. Cars have 2 and motorcycles have 1. Duh. But same thing. I don’t see 2 headlights so GO!

Basically our minds make assumptions about the world so that we function more efficiently. Too much data is entering our minds to process it all.

Watch some shows on how the mind works. Very interesting.

And the end result of all this? The motorcycle T bones a car turning in front of them and the rider goes flying hitting a telephone pole or whatever.

I learned so much safe driving techniques at that age thanks to having a street bike. Staying visible, intentional eye contact, blind spots, etc. I get the fact they’re dangerous, but it could be a good thing with proper guidance.

You could always compromise and let him get a navi or a grom.

Hope you have more than one kid. It's not a matter of if, but when. The if, is if they live through their inevitable horrible accident. Doesn't matter how safely you drive, you can't account for idiots. Maybe a stoplight and some dumbass is on his phone, game over. Im getting the reality of motorcycles in my kids heads early.

Purchase 2 late model 250F motocross bikes for each of you to ride offroad together. Teach him how to ride and let him bust his arse a few times. Then take him out the next weekend and continue woods riding - (Camp Shelby, Foresthill type places). If he is still cocky, take him to a local motocross track.
2 things may happen:
1. He prefers offroad/MX
2. He will not want to bust his arse ever again and have nothing to do with bikes

See if you can get him a good deal on an H1 Hummer. He will come home every night.

If he can pay for everything then there isn't much you can do...you can put your foot down but are you really going to kick your child out for doing something relatively unsafe against your wishes? That's pretty much what it means to be a kid. You draw that line now and he is going to want nothing to do with you even as he wises up, because you lorded over him not from the stance of provider but controller.

Now if he needs your money that is different, and as he wises up (and incurs more bills) he will understand your no.

But if he has the resources...well, keep him in the nest at his own risk.

The best time for a bird to fly is when it is ready, not when the parents are.

Some truth BUT motorcycle riders are just as, if not more, at times

I used to want a bike, but I generally try to avoid putting myself in situations where a 16 year old girl could kill me. I’d never live that down.

If you "let" him do it for god's sake don't let him buy a liter bike first.

I haven't ridden in over 10 years, but every few months I look at one of these and drool. So far I have been able to avoid the pull. Under 600 pounds wet with me on it and 209hp is a literal joy machine.

It doesn't help that I watch MotoGP, and my beloved Ducati has been destroying the competition lately.
