Piper, my border collie, has a bladder tumor that is inoperable. We are bringing her home, going feed her some salmon and take her for a convertible ride or two, and then bring her back to the vet. This dog loved everyone, and cats and dogs (but she would eat a squirrel).

Dog doesn't have a mean bone in her body. The vet's employees have two boys that stay at the clinic at times, both around 3 years old. One played outside with Piper, the other played inside when it started raining.

The tearjerker story. When the vet was sedating her for the exploratory surgery yesterday, one of the boys held Piper's head, telling her "you'll be fine" and "it will be ok." Vet said that made him tear up.

Sorry for your loss, and good on you for treating her like a queen on her last day. I'm not at all emotionally prepared for this to happen to me.

I’m so sorry. She’s beautiful.

When I had to put my border collie down the whole vet clinic came in the room and my vet cried while giving the injection. He was a special dog and they are a very special breed.

Rip pretty girl.

Good luck man. It's one of the tougher things I've ever had to do. Just let her live out the rest of her time having a blast.

She loved little kids. On two occasions, we introduced her to kids who had been bitten by a dog and were scared of dogs. Piper helped them get over their fear of dogs.

She had some adventures (e.g. photobombed a local news report).

I knew this would be a rough one because she's been sweet and kind to the last day.

That stinks. It was a sad day at the 0358 house when our shih zhu Beau had to be put down. It's a tough few weeks.

I still can't believe I let my wife and son talk me into a new dog a few months later.

Sorry for you loss. It's going to be rough if I ever have to put my drinking buddy down.

I feel ya. Sounds like ours. She died a week ago Monday, and we are still struggling with not seeing her. She was my wife's constant companion. She was only 9. I tear up daily when I think about her, and not having her anymore.

Dammit I never want to click on these threads but I always will.

My Great Dane is at the top end of her lifespan. Hate to think about putting her down. And I have an aussie that is a few years behind her. Both just awesome dogs that I can't help but think about when reading these threads.

Be there for Piper till the end. She will thank you.

Went through the same thing 2 years ago . What is the deal with bladder cancer and Border collies ? I thought he had a kidney or UTI . We did comfort measures with Tramadol. It was almost like he said one day let’s go get this over with. I’m sorry for you losing your buddy . Of course you need another one ASAP. My wife got two Corgis . What a trip compared to Border collies.

Sounds like the squirrel might testify otherwise about no mean bones.

But sers, losing a pet suuuucks. It's one of the main reason I can't bring myself to getting another. I'm too much of a little bitch to go through that much angst again.

So very sorry
She’s a beautiful girl & it sounds like she has lived a damn good life

“Dogs’ lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know that pain is coming, you’re going to lose a dog, and there’s going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can’t support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion. There’s such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price.” — Dean Koontz
