On Tuesday, a comment on Reddit that suggested Mattress Firm was laundering money went viral – it has since been removed.

Reddit users said that the company was overstored in the US, given that it stocks a product that people typically buy every seven to 10 years, and suggested that this was a sign of something more dubious.

These photos show why this wild conspiracy theory even came into question.

Mattress Firm stores are everywhere — and a wacky conspiracy theory suggests a crazy reason why. A wild conspiracy theory has been making the rounds on the internet after a Reddit thread, which claimed that the company was money laundering, went viral. The comment was subsequently deleted, The Next Web reported. "Mattress Firm is some sort of giant money laundering scheme," a Reddit user wrote, adding: "I remember seeing 4 mattress firms all on each corner of an intersection once, and there is no way there is such a demand for mattresses." Mattress Firm is the largest specialty retailer in the US. It has 3,500 stores in total. This number jumped in 2015 when it acquired the second largest chain, Sleepy's.

Never thought of this, but now I 100% believe it to be true. Not to mention, no one is ever in those stores.

I can’t be convinced until TPA digs into it.

Truth! The one time I went to price mattresses (bought Casper), we were the only souls inside.

I usually don't buy into stuff like this but this is interesting.

I will say that I do believe that all conspiracy theories have a certain degree of truth to them.

So you’re saying there’s more than cash under that mattress?

Good lord 72 month financing on a freaking mattress.

Every time I've been in one of those stores (less than 5 times) I was either the only person or there was maybe 1 other group of shoppers present.

Considering half the OT doesn't sleep on the same bed or shop with their SO, the number of mattress stores isn't too surprising.

Cash businesses are frequently use to launder money, not usually businesses that encourage credit.

UFO’s are probably more plausible than this business model laundering cash.

We actually bought our mattress from there, and unlike the big furniture stores that are near it that we checked out, the store was obviously much smaller so I would expect there to be more of them.

It was actually a great deal, and besides the super expensive options, they were just as comfortable and much better deals. It's almost as if they know you'll get frustrated at the bigger furniture places. We just dropped in because we were grabbing a bite to eat at nearby.

I also bet they have a lot of stores because they had one employee up front and she didn't pester us like the 100s that seem to be lurking in a furniture store. There were also multiple other customers that were there throughout. And the employee didn't seem like one involved in a criminal enterprise, but with 3,500 stores and going undetected until Reddit got on the case must mean they run a tight ship.
