Mt. St. Helens eruption

57 people died in the catastrophic eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980. Mostly smothered by ash.

He was 83. He knew if he evacuated he was never coming back and would spend what time he had left rotting in some old folks home. Instead he chose to go out like a boss.
There are worse things than dying. Much worse.

It was his very documented choice and he stood by it. I would think he would be admired here today and his convictions applauded at age 83. Guess some don't see it that way and make jokes.

I had just turned 10 years old when Mount St. Helens erupted. I remember being very confused because all the news coverage showed mud and ashes, but no lava. I didn’t understand how a volcano could erupt and there was no lava.

Eta….Mt. St. Helens blew its top and still has more prominence than most CO Rocky Mountains.

I went down this rabbit hole a while back when this was mentioned a while back. A photographer died too. I can’t imagine needing such photos I’d die for it.

The safety zone was deemed to be about 5-6 miles away. The amount of power expelled was no fathomable at the time.
