Well, not much hiking to be done near New Orleans. Best place in LA is in Kisatchie National Forest, about 4 hours away.

Are you really in Boston now? Because if so, the Alaska & Calgary winters won't be as big of a shock as Louisiana summers.

It seems like 65K will go farther in NO than either of the other two places though.

Apparently Alaska hasn't figured out how to put running water and indoor plumbing in homes. At least that's how it looks on the Buying Alaska show.

The WX in ANC isnt nearly as bad as CGY. CoL in ANC and CGY is higher than NO.

Getting a car/truck to ANC is a pita, but doable.

Anchorage is a shithole but near some great stuff. Calgary is actually colder than Anchorage. Also near some nice stuff but not as close as Anchorage. Plus its a foreign country even though they speak our language. New Orleans well, you know..

Pick whichever one sounds like the most fun for you, probably won't last more than 3 or 4 years anyway unless you want it to. If you are a good welder you can go anywhere can't you?

Was just in Anchorage about a month ago. VERY small city, not nearly as "cosmopolitan" as New Orleans or Calgary, but with lots of outdoor opportunities.. in the summer.

Just remember this. In Anchorage in the summer, it stays light a long time. They still had dusk past midnight in mid-July. But conversely, in the winter the sun comes up around 10:30 AM and sets around 2 PM.

Not sure I could handle that AND the cold.

Calgary is much bigger, so that's where the opportunities are. Especially if you're early career that's the place to go and it isn't close.

Agree. And surrounded by natural beauty to boot. And you can say about like a boot.
