I'm trying to remember who first brought this to the board years before it was for public consumption. Was it Slippy?

professionals that are supposed to be looked up to, attorneys,

I distinctly remember being told that attorneys are several times more likely to abuse drugs and then even more likely to abuse alcohol. #ModernDayRoleModels

That must be why they're universally admired by the people.

Slippy does insurance defense and they were the first ones to start putting things together that there was fraud. That makes sense.

a little more Wendy Vitter savagery
quote:

Following a chaotic courtroom scene in which Motta’s mother fainted and Motta sobbed and vomited at the defense table, Chief U.S. District Judge Wendy Vitter remanded her and Giles to the custody of U.S. Marshals, saying the lawyers’ convictions earlier in the afternoon — as well as what Vitter called Motta’s brazen decision to record witnesses after her indictment — posed risks to their communities.
quote:

Addressing Motta’s defense attorney, Vitter noted that her alleged co-conspirator, the disbarred attorney Sean Alfortish, faces an August trial date on fraud and murder charges tied to the 2020 slaying of a witness in the case. Motta’s defense had revolved largely around the idea that she was duped by the older Alfortish into perpetrating the scheme.
quote:

Vitter invoked a recording played during the trial in which Motta called a witness in the case, which prosecutors argued constituted a violation of her bond. "I have no reason whatsoever to believe that she was naive and was under the influence of anyone else,” Vitter said. “In fact, I believe Ms. Motta was aware of what she was doing at all times." Vitter also sharply rejected an argument by Giles’ lawyer that he had not known he was a target of the federal probe at the time he chose to record witnesses. “He has failed to show by clear and convincing evidence that he is not likely to flee or pose a danger to the community if released,” Vitter said. Vitter made her statements as Motta continued to vomit into a garbage pail while several people inside the courtroom attempted to comfort her.

I have to imagine that other attorneys are still in the crosshairs. Who knows - maybe the prosecutors offer Giles or Matta a reduction in time for more names??

I was a congressional staffer back in the early 2000s. Even as a congressman’s wife, she was smart and serious. I’m glad she’s in the position she is now. With all the bullshite she put up with, she more than earned it.

Too bad Motta had to go and smear the Nobel reputation of PI attorneys

here's a fun side note...if you were wondering why the assistant US attorney gave the press conference after the verdict, and not the brand new US Attorney for the Eastern District David Courcelle, here's why (from 2021)
quote:

An attorney for The King Firm, David Courcelle, has strongly defended it. In response to the new suit, Courcelle said: “The King Firm did nothing wrong and worked hard to uncover the truth. We interviewed witnesses, hired investigators and obtained interviews and recordings of many individuals. Among the recordings are Damian Labeaud, who told us in 2017 that he ‘guaranteed on his life’ he never referred any fraud cases to us and was never involved in any fraud.” Courcelle added, “The King Firm has done everything right from beginning to end and will fight against this lawsuit.”

It’s because he was hired to do a job. That’s what attorneys do.

Courcelle is an excellent, stand up guy and pretty conservative.

These are scrum attys. They should be locked up in a state prison for life, not country club fed. Lessons need to be taught. The adult “victims,” too. Imagine putting your child in danger for money.

What do you think the sentence will be for each? Alfortish will rot, right?

I don’t know if I was the first, SFP, but I was harping about the issue early on. I had a client pay Motta almost a million dollars. It was shortly after other defense lawyers started to call attention to the recurring scenarios. I knew the whole thing stunk but I couldn’t prove it. Other defense lawyers had smoking guns like the slammer’s phone number popping up in the plaintiff’s call history. I didn’t have that. Even had a federal magistrate conduct the settlement conference and urge me to pay it.

She will get her just desserts. In prison.
