Strange that don’t standardize type equipment. Seems like the most expensive bike is going to win.

competitive cheer.

That's expensive just on injuries and physical therapy alone. ACLs and other bad injuries are so common in that.

Sailboat racing

Depends on whether or not the boats are supplied by a school/yacht club. Otherwise it’s really just wetsuits, shoes and some other gear. And lacrosse isn’t too bad compared to hockey, but is definitely more than baseball.

Came across this one ski club, Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club, that posts their prices. U-12 club after-school rates are between $4k and $4,400 per year and
quote:

Program fees do not include season passes, competition travel costs, or cost for USSA and FIS registration.
Or the house in Aspen. Or the equipment.

When they're young I plan on having them play whatever is in season. Being active and developing team skills is the highest priority for me.

That’s the best attitude to have. Let them find something they have a passion for. It also helps them avoid repetitive stress injuries from playing the same sport year round. Had a lacrosse coach recommend basketball due to the footwork that can be developed.

Tried to get my son into sail boat racing, I love being out on a boat to watch, but it was a bit out of his wheelhouse. 4 years of multiple camps, now I can’t get him to even sign up.

What I’ve gotten from this thread is that every youth sport can become ungodly expensive

I don't think you could make track and XC expensive if you tried. Maybe if you only traveled to go to elite competition, but even then it doesn't even come close to these other sports. Pole vault being the exception.

My son got in the car from track practice tonight, and told me he needed spikes for the meet tomorrow. Fun morning adventure.

Let me put a fine point on what I mean by astronomical: $500,000.

That number comes right out of a recent study by U.S. Ski & Snowboard that surveyed clubs across the country. It concluded that the total gross cost for a junior ski racing career up through the high school level could total more than half a million dollars for those in the elite programs. And there are many in private scenarios spending far more.

Dance is 5X more expensive than any other

This is the correct answer based on my experience. I’ve paid $1,000-$1,800 the last 4 years for HS dance team, I’ve paid $2-3,000 a year for regular dance classes the last 13 years and competition dance runs around $2,000 plus travel/hotel when going to competition. It’s also paid off with a paid 3 day trip to Vegas where she was a dancer for some American Idol winner named Jordin Sparks.

She graduates this year and will be going to LSU. She’s there right now for a Golden Girls clinic. Hopefully she’ll be good enough to make it. I hope she does bc this will be the closest I get to having a kid on the field in Tiger Stadium lol.

Might not be as bad in a WI or MN where you don’t have to travel as far, have more local teams, more ice/rinks which probably means smaller fees, etc. but it’s the worst in the northwest.

It is standardized. We have stock and modified classes. Yes people with more money can do more with their bikes, but no amount of money can overcome talent and work ethic. Even at the amateur level, motocross is the most physically demanding sport there is. People tend to relate it to car racing where car setup is 75% of the equation. That’s not the case here, it’s all on the rider. You can take a great rider and put them on a bone stock bike and they will still destroy a moderate rider on the best bike money can buy.
I have a factory built bike in my garage with parts on it not available, it honestly doesn’t make me any faster. I only have it because I have access to it.

Golf is an expensive hobby. But if you have a kid who is real good and can compete at a high level week after week. It’s not that bad as compared to say travel baseball. I will say this... golf is very hard and the hardest sport to be consistinatly be real good at..... golf is the ultimate test of you against yourself..... the only defense is the elements.

Girls competitive cheer is steep. Monthly fees, special price gouging uniforms for every practice day, and events that are typically out of town. My wife really won’t even let me know what we spend a year but I would guess it’s in the $20-25K range for 1 daughter.
