Golf,
My son did golf through the school for a few years. It wasn't that expensive. Bought a used set of clubs for him for $100. I think the school fee was about $200 which covered practice and instruction at a local country club. School uniform was another $100. Had he done more competitive golf, I could see the cost quickly increasing though.

tennis
Daughter did tennis, and even with year round stuff it really wasn't that bad. I'd have to do a comparison, but from memory, swim was more expensive than tennis was. Tournament fees were usually only around $50, and most of the ones she did were fairly local and didn't require hotel room.

(I'd prefer multiple sports, honestly),
Then it sounds like they will play multiple sports, Aren"t you the parent ?
Just play rec stuff until they are in HS, if they are good enough to make a HS team and want to focus on one sport at that point, then get more serious

If your kids suck don’t spend a dime on them

LOL. I feel ya! When both of my daughters went to college it was a huge raise to get them out of competitive dance and very serious ballet. Both had aspirations to do it professionally and could have but chose STEM - so Dad's not going to have to support them forever.
If you don't know what a summer intensive is or haven't bought pointe shoes for a lead nutcracker role type dancer it's totally understandable that you couldn't get how expensive it can be. Of course, there are ways to "take dance" and it not be expensive just like there are ways to do any of the sports mentioned here less expensively. But all in - I'd put dance up against anything. Did I mention the 3-week dance company European tour to compete overseas? LOL
Edit: Yeah I'm a little salty about all that.

I made an equestrian Dad gasp once going over dance expenses.
He was gasping because he realized how much less you pay for dance than he does for horses.
Horses are $$$$$$$ bc you pay for the same outfits, shows, travel expenses, lessons and equipment that are associated with any sport. On top of that you have to pay for the horse itself, which can easily get into six figures. The horse has its own set of expenses: somewhere to board if you don’t own your own place, vet bills, farrier, food, horse trailer.

I have 2 in All-Star Cheer and it is ridiculous the amount of money it cost.

Rocket Donkeys
I know of a family that easily spent well north of $1MM (they could afford it) to try and win the American Futurity- which was a $1MM prize if I recall.
I’m talking Peterbilt, new barn, $250k horse, trainers- and they still had to velcro the kid in the saddle to be able to ride the horse.

Equestrian.
There is no more expensive sport. My daughter (no pics) has ridden English since she was 4. It is a great activity and most of the people are great. But it is very expensive.
Between board for the horses, vet bills, and all the other stuff makes travel ball look like a trip to McDonalds.

Throw out a number.
Eta: An empty horse stable will be $10k per year.

We talked about renting horses. Of course if someone wants to buy a six figure horse they can spend whatever they want. But one can at a very high level compete renting a horse. Doing dance we outspent an accomplished equestrian rider over the course of a year easily - including horse upkeep. He was shocked. And he had no idea because he had no daughters.
But it's not a pissing contest - they are both ridiculous.

Minor scrapes and bruises, and the were mouth pieces. I make mine wear a padded cap since he plays hooker and is in the middle of the scrum. More ti protect himself from cauliflower ears.
This is his 6th year playing. There have been very few major injuries. One kid dislocated a shoulder, and another kid twisteda knee.
