Divorce is up among middle-aged and older Americans, even as younger generations are less likely to get divorced, a recent analysis finds.

According to the Bowling Green State University’s National Center for Family and Marriage Research, divorce rates doubled for Americans over 55 and tripled for those over 65 from 1990 to 2021. At the same time, divorce rates among young adults have dropped.

The uptick in divorce among Baby Boomers is due to various factors, sociologist Brad Wilcox says, from cultural shifts in attitudes toward marriage to where these adults are currently at in life’s journey.

“There’s been an uptick in divorce among Baby Boomers since the 1970s,” Wilcox told Fox News Digital. “They were part of a generation that came of age in the 1970s and late 1960s when there was a much more individualistic spirit that was coursing through American life. It was called ‘The Me Decade’ by Tom Wolfe, who was a famous writer in that time.”

Boomer retirements getting split in half. Imagine spending decades with a person and you still grow old alone.

Most women that reach 80 will die alone and in a care facility.

The average age for a couple entering their first divorce is 30 years old. And 60% of divorces involve spouses between the ages of 25 and 39. Women are more likely to file for divorce than men. The highest divorce rate is for African-American women aged 50 to 59.

[quote]For instance, the groups with the most prolific experience of marriages ending in divorce are downscale adults (adults making less than $20,000
annually) (39 percent), Baby Boomers (38 percent), those aligned with a non-Christian faith (38 percent), African-Americans (36 percent), and people who consider themselves
to be liberal on social and political matters (37 percent).

Sometimes these divorces are false flags. The couple doesn't actually split up. They just divorce to get more monetary benefits. I knew someone who got divorced so his wife wouldn't get stuck with his medical bills after he died.

I'd be curious to see the numbers of whether or not those couples had been divorced from a previous spouse, i.e. is this their first marriage?

I've already said this in the cheating thread and it applies to both cheating and divorces.

People are having kids later, the couple focuses on raising those kids and not on themselves. They don't date, don't show each other attention, don't "date" each other.

Then years go by and they look at each other and have no idea who that other person is. A lot of these divorces are because of cheating, but some are just a result of growing apart.

This is very common. Especially when insurance issues/retirement issues come into play

Good. Now they can keep working longer and contributing to Social Security for those of us that are happily married and retiring very soon.

I know a guy who was a divorce attorney when Viagra came out in the 90s. He said that they never had elderly clients but when Viagra launched all of a sudden they got a bunch of formerly celibate old people coming in wanting a divorce because of cheating or a wife putting her foot down on a closed chapter of married life.

Im no historian, but i believe marriage was created when the average human lifespan was somewhere between 40-50 years old.. people werent designed, IMO, to be married for 60 years like my grandparents were (who hated each other’s guts btw, and should have divorced) and it’s unsustainable .

So dumb.. maybe talk to those “young adults” in 30 or 40 years and THEN report their divorce rate ? .. and better yet, their rates of happiness/satisfaction …
