I enjoy my 2 min to work in Monroe

We live in BR and my wife has a 5 minute commute and mine is about 15. We live relatively close to work though and don't have to use the interstates.

It's all relative to where you live and work and which direction you are traveling. Zachary or Central to Exxon or downtown isn't bad but from Gonzales it would kind of suck. There are some commutes from the burbs that usually aren't very painful at all.

I grew up near Monroe, spent most of my life there. I've lived in Baton Rouge for the past 10 years.

Monroe could be a good area but enough businesses have left (without others coming in to fill the void) to slowly drag that area down. It's not as much of a hellhole as Alexandria but *when* CenturyTel/Link moves their HQ out of state (5 to 10 years after Post retires as CEO), expect it things to go downhill fairly quickly.

They desperately need another large company to open an office there. The area has never really recovered from State Farm and the Guide plant pulling out.

Even with the traffic problems I prefer Baton Rouge over Monroe.

This is not happening. Post made sure all bases are covered. If CL were to leave, St Francis would shut down within a year. The only hospitals in Ouachita Parish would be Conway and Glenwood. Measures have been put in place to insure this does not occur.

State Farm, Guide, and IP leaving were huge downturns for Monroe. Century Link and IBM are paving the way for the next generation, however.

Monroe doesn't have LSU

So BR has the advantage 6 Saturdays a year.

7 Saturdays, plus dozens of home baseball and basketball games and the fact that LSU's campus supports a whole host of creative activities like plays, restaurants, concerts, and art shows.

Lots of rumors about Centurylink leaving Monroe-if that happens, the local economy is screwed. Cost of living is cheaper there, including insurance. It was a good place to raise a family, but you may want to consider private schools if you have kids.

They are likely leaving Monroe for Dallas within 5 years.

If Louisiana is lucky, we can convince them to move operations to another city in the state or keep something in Monroe.

Well that is actually West Monroe but BR has all the plants and smells like burnt Corndogs so the smell factor for each is a wash.

depending on your pay, you could live like a king in the West Monroe area compared to BR

Housing prices are generally about the same. I know, I just bought a home in Monroe. The only way you would live like a king is if you actually bought a rundown trailer in the Bawcomville area of West Monroe.

To each his own, but I recently moved to Mecca after living in BR for the last 9 yrs and it’s like paradise. That’s more of a nod at how big a shite hole BR has become.

I mentioned WM for a reason..If you live in Denham or surrounding areas, you get a better deal than living in BR..Same thing for the Ouachita area..
