Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo recently presented a key to the city to Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam.

Farrakhan met with some community leaders at Monroe Regional Airport before a departing flight. He was in town for his granddaughter's graduation at Grambling State University.

Rod Washington, spokesman for the city of Monroe, said Mayo "is keenly aware of the multi-faceted viewpoints that many people hold in relation to Minister Farrakhan. However, his brief stay in Monroe was positive."

Farrakhan, 84, has lead National of Islam since 1977. The Southern Poverty Law Center classifies Nation of Islam as a black separatist hate group because of its open hostility to Jews, Catholics, LGBT people and whites. The group has a separate theology from mainstream Islam and advocates that black people are innately superior to whites.

The local Nation of Islam Study Group is active within the community.

I guess with Funroe's electorate, you just can't hold the Mayo.

I wish more people would listen to Farrakhan speak. He is a tremendous orator and has some great points. His views mirror many of the far right and are in no way part of the liberal agenda. Its strange that people fault them for being armed or protecting their communities, when that's what most Americans believe and support. If you take a black Muslim and put them in the same room with a Christian Conservative, almost all their stances are identical..

There's a good chance they're both blinded by racism.

I’ve never heard him speak and don’t know a lot about him or his group, but

SPLC is generally most concerned with white racist groups so this is significant

Yeah. Farrakhan thinks the white man is the devil and far right people think whites are superior. They are both deplorable.

You are so stupid.

You don't even realize that just 10 years ago, Christianity was CELEBRATED.

How can it not be?? The 10 commandments are literally the guidelines to good morals. And because Christians don't want abortions, now they are the bad guys? fricking millennials suck so bad.

Compare that the the Muslim "10 commandments"

You know, sex with little girls is OK, Women are 1 step up from dogs, but can be raped as needed. When you die, there are 72 little girl virgins waiting for you to rape for eternity.

fricking what in what right?

BTW, White Christians - are WITHOUT QUESTION the most tolerant group on the planet. Why the frick do you think diversity only exists in white nations??

Its amazing, but all the downvotes just prove my point. They are opposed to social welfare, the minimum wage and hiring quotas. They believe in home ownership, supporting local businesses, no debt and protecting your property. Most black Muslims are married, employed home owners with little debt. Socially they are very conservative. The hate surrounding them is obvious and where it comes from, but I don't think it is justified and most people don't care to hear their views..
