If the bullshite with these modern lightbulbs gets any deeper, it's going to be over my head. (...and I'm a foot taller than Mingo.)

Bought some bulbs at the store probably less than two years ago. Bulb in the hallway already went out, even though it doesn't get that much usage.

Took a piece of the packaging to the store to try and match the color / brightness. Old packaging claims the bulbs last **9 years**? My arse. Now the new packaging claims they last **22 years**? Does anyone believe this shite?

At least the old incandescent bulbs were cheap.

maybe they mean the glass lasts 22 years and not that they will work for 22 years

what does the * refer to at the end? lol

Yep, it's a scam. I put all LED bulbs in our house 6 years ago and I've easily replaced them all multiple times. But hey, you save 58 cents on your electric bill annually even though the bulbs are like 5x the cost of normal ones

I’ll let you know in like 18 years. Or sooner if your suspicions are confirmed.

Lol, those numbers are based off of the bulbs only being used just a few hours a day. Of course most people blow straight through the hours leading to the bulbs not making it to 22 years, let alone 9.

They don't last 2 years in lights that we rarely use.

We still have incandescent bulbs in our closets from the 1960’s! The light quality is nigh-orgasmic

I wish I would find a tractor-trailer of the bastards I bet could retire.

I agree, and LED doesn’t have nearly the life that they claim, but the light itself is so much better, imo.

I’ve never had a name brand fail, but bought some cheap ones that were crap.

Some brands are better than others. It isn't just a glowing wire filament anymore, the LED and boards can vary.

My Cree bulbs have been going strong for at least 5 years, with some being on 6-8 hrs a day.

There are always other circumstances. Im not advocating for or against them. Everyone has different experiences. Many customers I had were split on them as well. But thats what the asterisk states on the fine print.

Unfortunately you're either gonna have to use halogen which get ridiculously hot or the LEDs. Both are hit or miss.

Interesting. I just changed out 48 bulbs in my house and used LEDs. We’ll see how it goes.

But about three years ago I changed about 80 of those candle looking incandescents. They are in 3 and 4 bulb outdoor sconce type fixtures. I calculated a payback of 14 months. These bulbs are on about 10 hours every single night. I haven’t replaced any of them, although I know there are about 5 or 6 that are burned out. The incandescents burned out A LOT.

Light bulbs are the original scam. Edison's first bulb is still burning. Look it up.

They build them to break. Motherfrickers.

I just wish someone would set out to frick the industry by building true lifetime bulbs and sell them for $40. I would buy them just so I didn't ever have to change them again.

I don't disagree at all. I had a front row seat to the changes bulbs made in the past 10-15 years. From bad to worse to mediocre. Starting with CFL.

My experience is similar. New bulbs don't last and the light they put out is weak as frick. And they are expensive.

The bulb lobby can get fricked.

Bought a brand new house that had "40 year" hardwired LED lights. Most all went out in 1st yr and were replaced under warranty. Now in the 2nd yr and just replaced 3 more

Just change a GE in guest bath that is on 24/7. Marked it with a sharpie when I installed it on 1/26/2010.

Our house has a ridiculous amount of light bulbs. I think it's around 100. The led bulbs are brighter and make sense in some areas and I think they last about twice as long as regular ones but they don't really justify the additional cost imo.

I've started swapping fixtures to the LED fixtures with the little lights on the board (I don't know what they are called). We remodeled our kitchen almost six years ago, and I put up three LED fixtures. They're still working and are as bright as they've ever been. No changing bulbs for 6 years so far in those, only 4 more to go to hit what they advertised.

ETA: These exact fixtures. One large, two medium.

What brand are they? My neighbor and I have been discussing how long our have been lasting. I had good luck with Philips and he bought them on my rec.

I have over 100 in one house (of various types, most medium Edison) and I have replaced one in just over 5 years based on my Amazon order date. The camp has about 60 and I haven't replaced in but they have only been in for a little over 2 years. The ones in the great room of the primary house run an average of about 10 hours a day when taking into account days we aren't there, that is where 1 has burned out.

They have been more than worth the money I paid just to avoid constantly changing the ones I have to drag the 12' step ladder inside to reach.

I never research the cycling of LED bulbs but standard filament bulbs burn out faster with more on and off cycles.

If you are buying high-quality brand name bulbs I am surprised at your failure rate based on my anecdotal experience. I just look at the package and mine say "10 years" which in small print is 21 hours a week. That is roughly 11,000 hours. They are warranted for 3 years @ 21 hours a week so 3285 hours.
