A Missouri school district is promising staff training on cultural bias after an elementary school teacher asked students in an assignment to “set your price for a slave.”
A fifth grade teacher at Blades Elementary School in St. Louis was placed on administrative leave Monday night after parents complained about a “culturally insensitive” classroom assignment given to students.
The assignment asked 12 questions about historical trade and market practices. One of the questions read as follows: “You own a plantation or farm and therefore need more workers. You begin to get involved in the slave trade industry and have slaves work on your farm. Your product to trade is slaves.

The mother of a biracial child, Angela Walker says she was shocked to find the assignment among the schoolwork in her son’s folder. She hopes the teacher and school district will learn from the incident.

Racism of any kind, even inadvertently stemming from cultural bias, is wrong and is not who we aspire to be as a school district. I am sorry and disappointed that this happened in our school,” said Gaines in the statement. "There is no quick fix for cultural bias. We will be devoting significant time and resources to train our staff on issues related to cultural competency, implicit bias and equity.”
The NAACP has called for a formal apology from the teacher and superintendent. They also offered to help train school staff.

Pretty dumb of him.
But I’d say $350.

Why? The slave trade happened, not only in America but all over the world. We have to pretend that it didn’t happen now because “I’m offended”?

That's a discussion for much older folks to have and should be used as an illustration of how dehumanizing slavery is. 5th graders? Fuuuuu

The only way we are supposed to acknowledge it is with guilt and talk of reparations.

How hard would it have been to ask "how much for a bushel of fresh corn?"?

Why?
because its pretty simple to accomplish the same exercise without asking 11 year olds to put a price on another human being

I'd actually volunteer to take that training just for the experience.

Going anywhere near race, gender, or sexual orientation is guaranteed career suicide in 2019.
Dude may have had a great lesson planned, but he's an unaware buffoon.

Reading about the slave trade is a little different than having an activity where you have to put yourself in the shoes of an actual plantation owner and go through some of the motions of trading slaves yourself as a student.
It was pretty dumb to do.

This way too complex of a question for a fifth grader.
How old is the slave?
How strong is the slave?
What skills does the slave possess?
So many variables determine price.

If you read the article, many other products, including grain, were asked about. You cannot eliminate slavery and the slave trade from historical discussion, even in the 5th grade. Slavery and its effects on our country are a lynchpin of American History.

Set your price for a slave. These could be worth a lot.
You may trade for any items you’d like.”
Here is the full question regarding slaves for those who don't want to read the article.
