Mississippi River could change its course forever during one major flood

Reading this article spooks me out a bit. As far-fetched as this article seems, remember that this article from 2013 also seemed far-fetched before 2016.
I didn't realize how close the control structure is to failing. Obviously it's still very strong and secure but one major flood could cause it to fail and if that happens, there's literally no going back. If it fails then the majority of the water would begin to flow through the Atchafalaya basin, resulting in the loss of Morgan City and many other towns and communities between the control structure and the gulf. The economic losses would be $14 million PER DAY and New Orleans would lose its status as a major port and would effectively die a quick economic death overnight.
Can you imagine the worldwide impacts? The unimaginable flooding?
Are there any experts who post here who can weigh in on this possibility?

These articles have been coming out at least once a year for the last 20 years it seems.

This is not news. We learned this in Louisiana geography in the seventies.

New Orleans is already slowly losing its port business
Would be an economic boom for St Mary Parish though

If that happens, the gulf seawater will come upstream past Nola. I would think Nola port would still have deep water access

All those plants up and down the river would be screwed.

They just have to keep pumping slurry into the voids which can be done indefinitely.

You do realize the ms river has changed course several times

This changes everything.
Except I won’t change a single thing I normally do.

Worldwide? No, I cannot imagine them.

Depending on who you talk to, there are those that believe we came close to seeing this in the flood of 2011.

If this happens, would BR still need a new bridge?

Odd since it's at an all time high right now

Came closer to happening in 73.
It’s not going to happen in our lifetime. These stories come out every year to let Louisiana mooch for more money to waste on food stamps.

Do you have the numbers to support this? I find it hard to believe that more goods are shipped through the Port of New Orleans than were shipped 30-40 years ago.

This article comes out as the new water campus is coming online.
Coincidence...?
