Despite widely available evidence that remote learning is a disaster for students in low income families, teachers are pushing hard to keep schools closed, which will prolong an economic shut down.

Mississippi teachers are planning a rally at the state Capitol Friday to urge state leaders not to reopen schools for the upcoming school year.

The group identifies itself as “a non-affiliated grassroots group of Mississippi teachers, school staff, and supportive community members who are concerned for the safety of our students, ourselves and our communities in returning to school.”

“All of us want to be back with our kids is the biggest thing,” said Max Vanlandingham, a teacher involved in planning the event. “Parents want their children to be in school, kids want to be in school, teachers want to be in school, but it’s not safe at this point.”

Each school district has to make a decision and post it to its website by July 31. Many have already done so, making tough decisions about how and when students will report back to the classroom if at all, how lunches will be served and bus transportation will work.

These teachers just don't want to work.

The few teachers I know said the end of last school year was awesome because the didn’t have to do shite. Wonder if that’s what the real push is about

I don't fricking understand this. I work with children/teens with Autism....my center has been empty since this all started and I've been nothing but telehealth.....it's driving me crazy!!! While it was sure less stressful at first to not deal with violent screaming tantrums on the daily, I'd give just about anything to be doing my normal job again...this has been mind numbing and has really done a number on my clients emotional health

I know there are some good ones, but they have to be the laziest professional group. Collectively.

How heroic of them.

They have no problem getting their fatasses a cheeseburger from the essential heroes at McDonald's though, I bet...

I’m friends with 5 or 6 public school teachers here and 15 or so private school teachers and every single one of them wants badly to go back to their classrooms.

They hated the virtual teaching and really want to be with their kids.

I know these people in the article are likely lazy fckers

Ok, reduce their salaries. Save taxpayer money. Problem solved.

The ones in the more affluent parts of town aren't that bad.

Can't imagine why though.

I saw a FB post by a teacher touting a poll of teachers in Louisiana that showed 80% of teachers said they don’t think in-person school is safe enough yet.

Of course they want full salaries though

Tell 'em the schools are about to cut faculty jobs and increase the teacher/student ratio from 25:1 to 50:1 resulting the need for less teachers on staff and see how their rally cry progresses.

Seriously, if

thought his paycheck and benefits were in jeopardy, would he still be planning the rally?

Yeah a survey of what, them and their friends? Our parish did one and 72% of the teachers wanted in school options for returning.
