Dogs are amazing. Our golden retriever saved me from getting bit by a rattler when I was 5.

We did that most every day in summer walking to and from the local swimming pool. Pro tip if you walk on the parking stripes in a parking lot it's not as hot as the regular pavement

Brooke Chase, Thea’s mother, said she had an instinct to check on her daughter who had been playing in the yard

She left a 2 y/o unattended outside with access to the woods. That "instict" must have hit her like a ton of bricks, since she doesn't appear to have any normally.

This. My boys are six and eight. I don't take my eyes off of them for long if they are in the back yard even fenced in. They will get into some shite in a hurry.

The uncle may have also been outside, perhaps doing something else, but she walked into the woods because she was unattended. He clearly wasn't watching her.

Plot twist ...

The family's 3rd dog, a Pit Bull, actually led her into the woods. That dog was unavailable for comment, saying he needed to get something to eat since "lunch was ruined."

I was playing golf one weekday afternoon a couple of years back at Santa Maria. As happens, I got paired up with a couple of elderly guys (who were funny as hell) and we were enjoying a leisurely round with a bunch of beer.

On the back nine one of the guys hit his drive over by the lake and went to look for it. He was just standing by the water staring down the bank and his buddy called out "what the hell you doing?" He all of a sudden walked down into the water and leaned down, when he stood back up he had a two year old toddler in his arms.

We stopped what we were doing and rushed over to them and he said "she was just standing there in water up to her waist." We wrapped the kid up in a towel and looked around and noted that there was a house about 75 yards away with a back porch door standing open. We took the kid over to the house and this lady comes out babbling in Arabic or Farsi or some ME language and snatches the kid from us, turns around and goes inside and slams the door.

Truly bizarre event. People need to watch their damn kids.

No wonder we have kept dogs around us for the last 10,000 years.

There was a Dragnet with a similar (and true, someone verified it) story. Two little girls show up missing from their home. They cannot be found. Detectives interview a former neighbor, who moved but was still somewhat close by. The mother of the missing children tells the detectives that her kids used to play with the former neighbor's dog until the neighbor moved. T

The former neighbor is at work (a bar) and tells the detectives that her dog showed up missing. She gives the detectives permission to go to her apartment, and that the back door is open in case her dog came home.

The detectives arrive, the the two girls and the dog are on the bed, safe and sound.

I would have summoned the rollers on that one, just because of the attitude.
