Millennials and closed captioning.

Can someone please explain to me why millennials watch everything with the closed captioning on? I thought it was just a strange deal with my step-daughters, but I come home from a weekend trip, and the house/dog sitter had the CC turned on with Netflix. I get it if they watched foreign shite, but this is English only programs. Why would anyone want to READ a movie/show if you speak the same damn language it is being broadcast in?

They sound like zoomers. The youngest millennials are like 30.

Movie/TV board. Also cause it's hard as hell to hear half of the dialogue in shows today.

Hell my wife does it and she’s 56

I don't really mind it UNLESS it is Sports. That's a big fat no no for me

Because I’m fricking deaf.

Imagine your basic millennial:
Now imagine them trying to pay attention to a conversation with their ears.
Got it?

I use them all the time now. I actually prefer it.

Probably cuts down on the "what the hell did he just say?"

I’m gen X, an I do that.

I do it if the accents are really strong and I can’t quite understand every word. I also do it for sci fi or fantasy and I want to catch every name and place and understand what’s going on. Peaky Blinders, game of thrones, etc.

I do it because I them don't have to have the volume up so high, especially when the room is busy

I just don't get it. You miss out on the facial expressions of the actors and you don't fully experience the director's vision when putting together the scenes. All because you are READING THE WORDS BEING SPOKEN, AND YOU UNDERSTAND THE frickING LANGUAGE!

It's like texting that they're used to. They prefer it over actually speaking.
They will text each other when they're in the same room.

I dont know if I'm getting old or what but starting about 5 years ago, I feel like you can't hear dialogue anymore in shows and movies. I remember the second season of true detective, I was astonished at how hard it was the hear the talking even with volume maxed and blowing me out of my seat.
So I watch everything with captions now and I can't go back.

I've been doing that. For shows I watch ftft (for the first time) it's a supplementary thing and it's not that distracting at all. It ensures I don't miss anything in the dialog

I turn on CC for everything except sports.

I think it’s horrible. Totally detracts from the primarily visual medium of a movie or tv show.
