I have DIY skills, but I'm pretty lazy and will attempt to pay someone to do it for me first before I eventually "sack up" and do it as a last resort.

If I do it myself, I put all these hardworking laborers out of work. I’m doing them a favor.

It is because boomer dads failed as fathers.

The new survey, conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Alarm.com, found that modern dads’ toolkits have declined too.

Alarm.com Blog- DIY Dads

Home & business security company paid an online polling company to provide "findings" so the security company could publish a blog about why you should buy their product. Then the New York Post spins the security company's blog post for clickbait.

C'mon, man.

My dad is pretty laid back most of the time but a lot of my memories of us working on shite are of him cursing, throwing tools, and yelling at my arse for not holding the light the right way.

This x 1000.

That being said I've always conscious of not being that guy because of all the cursing and bitching I had to listen to.

Also, I can fix anything in my house...period.

When I read "DIY skills", these are not the things I expected. This is just pathetic and why I'm often ashamed of my generation. Bunch of idiots.

There are definitely things I still leave up to professionals (like a large portion of auto repairs and maintenance), but I try to do as much as I can otherwise.

Gen Xer here.

My father was an English professor who couldn’t change a light bulb, but he could write an inter-dimensional sentence with 78 shades of meaning. He taught me how to kick arse at school.

I learned all of my man skills from my two father in laws. One was welder at River Bend and the other was a banker’s son who partied too much and ended up being a metal building contractor.

I’ve taken what they’ve taught me and have far exceeded their skill. Maybe it’s the 140 IQ that my professor dad gave me.

Millennial dads are less likely than their boomer counterparts to be able to change a car tire on the side of the road, unblock a toilet or sink, reset a tripped circuit breaker or even open a stuck pickle jar with their hands.

I’m no DIY guy, but pretty sure any idiot can do all of this stuff. But when it comes to like building custom furniture, installing lighting fixtures, general electrical work and plumbing work, etc I’m clueless. I bought a Ring doorbell and have no clue how to install it

lord i got tested on this around Christmas

my gf was telling a story about how once in law school the car she was in had a flat and 4 people in law school had 0 understanding of changing a tire. i was in disbelief and laughing b/c it's so easy

of course literally a week later she has a flat and is like "so let's see those tire-changing skills"

i did it in like 10 minutes so it wasn't a fail. only issue was my big jack didn't fit under her car so i had to use the shitty jack that came with her car, but i was NOT 100% confident prior to getting it off the ground

Survey had 63% of respondents identifying as Millennial fathers as being able to change a tire on the side of the road.

Survey had 79% of respondents identifying as Baby Boomer fathers as being able to change a tire on the side of the road.

One out of every five of every Baby Boomers who is a father admitted to not being able to change a tire. Let that sink in.

My old man was a machinist and could fix or build damn near anything. I have a white collar job but can do most stuff myself because he taught me a good bit before he died when I was 16

I’m 35 so I guess that makes me a millennial

Wow. I do not consider myself handy, but I can do and have done all those things. I can even change my car oil. I’ll admit, I don’t have the technical knowledge to do a lot of things, but I know enough about tools that if you explain to me what I need to do, I can probably figure it out. For the record, I’m 27.
