because i can do it quicker and better?

nothing pisses me off more than some jagoff handyman wanting hundreds of dollars to do a subpar job expecting you to not notice the cut corners.

Millennial dads are less likely than their boomer counterparts to be able to change a car tire on the side of the road, unblock a toilet or sink, reset a tripped circuit breaker or even open a stuck pickle jar with their hands.

Yeah that's scary.

How Gen X is stuck in the middle of all that is astonishing to me. On one hand, they were raised by boomers and made out great. On th other, they raised the back end of millennials and gen z who don’t look so hot. How does that happen

Because it’s not cool to be a father these days.

Boomers have pathetic technology skills compared to millennial dads...

Comparing of generations like this is dumb, growing up in different generations clearly leads to different skillsets, and that's ok.

I’m doing all of these things myself, but the older I get, the more valuable my time is to me. I will happily pay somebody to do something that I can easily do myself if it means I don’t have to waste a free weekend fricking with it.

Most of these are insanely easy and you would have to be retarded not to be able to do it on your own.

But I will say, a lot of new cars these days don't come with a spare tire, so this may be a bit misleading.

the times i remember fondest with my father where when we worked together on shite. fences, sheds, yard, concrete, killing yellow jackets, pump house, whatever. he taught me and spent time with me. it probably wasn't always easy for him but he did it.

i know very few millenial dads that could do this for their sons.

Agreed. My time is more important to me than some perceived manhood.

It’s probably got a lot to do with not being able to watch Macgyver. Wings was useless. Bet they’d like that show.

I'm Gen X and I'm much better at fixing things than my dad or my kids.

My take is that the Boomers and the Millenials are pretty similar overall, and part of this is that neither group cares much about machines or engineering.

Music festivals? Saving the world? Sure, Boomers and Millenials go for that stuff.

Fixing the water heater? No, not really.

Things like cars, guns, stereo equipment, etc. are great sources of joy to me, but the appeal seems lost on my kids and my parents. Probably goes in cycles or something.

Read it again. I just said that I’m doing all of those things myself, but there are plenty of things that I can do that I’d rather pay somebody to do. Anybody who can’t change a tire or open a fricking jar can’t be an actual grown man. I can paint my house, but if it needs painting, I’d much rather pay somebody to do that shite.

I bet boomer dads are less likely to fix the internet modem, reset the cable box, and wire the house for ethernet as well

Of course. But that’s not perceived as “manly” these days

ETA by boomers at least
