That is really the crux of my question. Are people just getting hung up on the looks or is there a legitimate complaint? I will be the first to say that I laugh my arse off every time I see an urban team standing on a street corner in camouflage. As a comedian said some years back, "shouldn't there uniforms have pictures of brick walls, cars and broken windows on them?"

BTW, not the police. Just legitimately curious. But it is telling that I immediately get attacked by the hard core cop haters. Don't have an answer, attack the messenger.

Just like our military, I want the cops to have superior fire power to the criminals. And they should be held accountable for when they screw the pooch.

A kid I graduated with a few years ago did two weeks of training with the local sheriff's office, and after a week of riding with another cop has his own unit car. This same kid was diagnosed as bi polar and was horribly picked on in school. Pretty scary when you think that these are the kind of guys handling up on these military grade weapons that come from federal grants.

Like our tax dollars going to uneccessary weapons, vehicles, and armor to small down departments where cops are ill trained and there is low crime? Nah, that's a bullshite complaint right there.

To me it is the "Us vs. Them" mentality that is the problem. When every Officer Tom in Podunkville, USA gets a kevlar vest, gas mask, and assault rifle, they suddenly think they're billy bad arse and are above everyone else. We should all be on the same team. Fight real crime and protect those who live their lives peacefully. No need to pull out the MRAPS and SWAT teams for a simple search warrants or peaceful protests.

How do you handle "armor"? By not getting shot correctly? Just like with the vehicle question: What is up with hating on police for having protection?

That is certainly different than complaints about their weapons I would think?

I have no problem with the police having the best gear availabe, even if some of that appears to be of military in nature.
Some probably think the cops can still ride around on horses and walk the beat with a billy club and .22 pistol.

Large groups have shown at times they will want to fck things up with powerful weapons and explosives. The police need to be able to battle back. This ain't 1955 Mayberry we are living in any longer.

With that said, I do want more attention given to weeding out shitty cops and departments who think they are above the law and can do what they want.

But outfitting every officer with something like a GoPro is "cost prohibitive".

I get this if you're fighting an enemy.

But if there are people in your own country who know the rules and know better, they deserve what is coming to them more than some faceless man across an ocean.

The problem is this:

Despite a tremendous drop in violent crime, the LEO community feels compelled to spend more and more dollars for MRAPs, ridiculous SWAT RV's, tricked-out $80K Tahoes and every type of gun and protective gear known to mankind.

I have no doubt some of this is necessary. Hell, they oughta give 'em stun grenades for Chicago, but the absolute majority of departments have no need for this crap.

Congrats, we get to pay for it.

I agree with all of this.

However, my problem lies more with the no-knock raids for small amounts of drugs and whatnot, checkpoints, and the general "us vs them" mentality.

This video is a prime example of what's wrong with modern policing.
