Roe v Wade is responsible for those drops in violent crime.

With that said, I do want more attention given to weeding out shitty cops and departments who think they are above the law and can do what they want.
As a long time LEO I agree with this 200%. Most departments are full of very well trained officers that are fully capable of handling the every day stress of being a officer. The biggest problem is the small poor towns that pay officers a terrible wage and they get poor candidates to be officers. I have seen other towns hire people who we fired because they were not fit to be officers. These are the ones that cause us embarrassment and negative media.
As far as the militarization of the police we still wear the same uniform every day and use the same weapons. We do have more military equipment now, but we use this mostly for hurricanes. Most of the pictures we see is of the SWAT teams which are usually well trained and in great shape. Most of our officers are also military trained and are either retired military or in the National Guard. Most of our guys are also college grads and played HS sports.

You Freakonomics, bro?

This was the day that started the changes in modern law enforcement
This was the day that pushed it even further towards more elaborate and modern weapons for LEO
The general statements in this thread are hilarious and stupid. The daily instances of heavy response being effective and limiting danger to civilians far outweigh the mistakes and tragedies. There are some in this thread bitching about officers with a lack of training and then others bitching about too much training. So which is it? Too much or not enough?
Also the law enforcement departments are actively recruiting combat veterans so what do you think is going to happen when you hire combat veterans, teach them engagement procedures and hand them weaponry? Are we supposed to be against LEO being veterans too?

Not at all, but how you engage a civilian who is suspected of committing a crime should be very different than how you engage a suspected terrorist in the sandbox.
Always wanted to say sandbox in that context. I hope the combat vets in here are cool with that.

not enough
They damn sure don't get enough driving training. Banning high-speed pursuit except in only the most serious instances would be a helluva start.

That is ridiculous. Just remember, we are United States citizens, not the enemy.

Most of the sheriff and police depts surrounding Lafayette hire anyone with a pulse. Don't kid yourself.

I moved to Houston a year ago from Louisiana. The nightly murder and crime report at 5,6 and 10 leads me to believe there is not as much difference as we would like to think
Murdering women? check
Murdering kids? check
Kidnapping? check
Slavery? check
shite blowing up for no apparent reason? check

And that's a goddamned shame. And I'm a veteran.

read some of the ridiculous general statements in this thread and compare to my ridiculous question
furthermore projecting your current respect and standing with the law versus the opinion of the typical criminal's respect and standing with the law would lead you to believe there is too much pertaining to you. However what is too much for you does not make a dent in the attitude and actions of a percentage of society that LEOs are more than likely going to encounter.

Should we just go back to this?
Personally, I'd rather see people getting beat with batons than have to listen to that annoying sound blaster. It makes for much better tv.

I am not kidding myself, I personally know the garbage that were in the Youngsville and Broussard PD.
My advice to you is vote, write your congressman or move. I moved.
