California is the technology capital of the world. Texas is the worker bee capital of the world. Both are important and serve their purpose and both have immense natural resources to boot.

My take is that California isn't for everyone.

- If you're an unskilled, low income employee that works at walmart or something then I guess it's probably just as good as any place. The COL is high but California has lots of welfare offerings. your lifestyle is highly subsidized, so why not live in a Mediterranean climate like God intended?

- If you're blue collar in a skilled trade, I think it can be pretty okay for you. The pay is pretty decent and working conditions can be nice. The caveat here is that finding a decent school for your kids may be tough. The big win here is that you retire with a good pension and hopefully a paid off home that is worth a lot and then you can move and live like a king in a low COL area like Florida, Arizona, or Idaho.

- If you're a regular middle-class white collar worker bee with only mediocre talent (like me), you will drown in California. The COL is too high and you don't qualify for any assistance.

- If you're a top tier worker in a high-demand STEM field then you can do very well in California and the proof is in the pudding. They thrive in technological innovation and the elite people in those industries flock there. The universities provide good jobs as well.

- If you're rich then living in California makes sense. So much to offer if you can afford it.

Are you in the shipping business? Houses in Palos Verde are REALLY expensive. Look for a good school district and buy the best house you can afford. People get a big surprise when they move to California. It's expensive to live here. There is personal income tax, gas tax is high, car registration is high, Sales tax is high, property tax, housing is expensive, etc. If you can afford it, it's a great place to live. Beach, ocean, mountains, great weather, etc. Good luck, just don't think you are making a big step up without research.

If I had to live in the Bay Area, I'd probably look into Fremont. If I worked in the OC or LA I'd have to get a very tiny place. If I'm traveling a lot all over SoCal and doing a lot of remote work then I'd look into Murrieta/Temecula and if I were in the IE, I'd check out Highlands/Redlands.

A pure telecommute would make a lot of the smaller towns and more remote areas in NorCal attractive. Very beautiful out there and somewhat affordable. Next time I go, I plan on checking out some old western towns, like Nevada City. They appear to be frozen in time.

The commute from Elk Grove to Sac may be doable as well.
