I lived in the South Bay nor 25 years, including 3 in San Pedro. SP's the place I'd head to if I moved back there.
Don't let people scare you, SP's a great place. And it always will be until it becomes the next, trendy hipster dump neighborhood. It's got everything--hometown vibe, bars, clubs, restaurants--none of them overrun by hipsters, etc. Sorta like the North Side of Chicago, except much smaller.
Plus you're close to LB and the Harbor Fwy. takes you into L.A.
Check this area out: Angel's Gate/Fermin Park, especially the neighborhood bordered by Shepard/S. Gaffey and 37th Street.
SP is one of the coolest unknown parts of L.A. You'll love it there.

Was stationed at Long Beach Naval Station for 6 years which is right across from SP. They had a tuna processing plant in SP and when the wind was blowing in the right direction it reeked pretty bad. Other than that LB is pretty cool and the Orange County coast is right there.

Anyone who makes a blanket statement that living in California sucks should be ignored. After 20 years in the military I have lived all over the world and the US.
There's positives and negatives about every single place. But hands down there's more to do and experience here than anywhere else I've lived. I live less than 5 minutes walking distance to the beach and the coastal towns are awesome.

Nah, he's from San Pedro by way of Compton. Technically he was born in Compton but they moved to San Pedro right away. When living in LA got too expensive, his immigrant parents moved the family to the shithole that is Aberdeen, Washington.

Great weather. Lots to see and do. Rush hour traffic never stops. Gangs in the area.

Being ex-Navy, I recommend Battleship USS Iowa and the Queen Mary.
Like living anywhere else, Southern California has it's own unwritten rules. Do NOT be too trusting. You will be living in the fast lane and can get run over quickly.
I don't mean to scare you, I just want to emphasize staying safe.
Be very careful until you get your bearings!

Right. Nobody in Texas has money.
Oil barons and ranchers don't have big houses or anything. Big business owners and CEO's in Austin and DFW don't live comfortably either. There are plenty of deep pockets in Texas.
Yeah, California has more billionaires than Texas, but not per capita.
Ross Perot, Robert Rowling, Mark Cuban, Michael Dell, etc. I'm sure have some nice living estates.
California can be ritzy, but the cost of living there is top 5 in terms of states in this country. The cost of living in Texas is below the national average.

Like I said, find a place around Pt. Fermin/Angel's Gate, around 31st Street out west to Sheperd, and you'll be living in one of the coolest little places in L.A.
All the best spots get sniffed out by yuppies and hipster: Echo Park, Silver Lake, Mt. Washington, even Culver City for God's sake.
SP's escaped that fate, making it one of the few real, authentic little towns in the shitropolis.
Or try Long Beach between East 4th and Ocean Bl., north of Belmont Shores.
You have nothing to worry about there except which beautiful women to hit on in the bars on Saturday night.

I'm well aware of that. It's a different geographical landscape. I haven't called you out on anything, so why do you keep jabbing me with comments about Corpus Christi? I don't even glorify my own city. I'm not sure what your agenda is.

He is talking about the Pacific Ocean and wine country. Napa isn't even the expensive area to live in. His point was the flat plains of Texas don't compare to the beauty of coastal California or the rolling hills in wine country.

The whole basis of his comments revolved around money and economy. I never compared the Texas plains to Napa from a view standpoint.
