Elon Musk has hailed this as a major achievement as well.

quote:

Most of us grew up learning there are three main types of matter that matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Today, that changed.

After a nearly 20 year pursuit, we’ve created an entirely new state of matter, unlocked by a new class of materials, topoconductors, that enable a fundamental leap in computing.

It powers Majorana 1, the first quantum processing unit built on a topological core.

We believe this breakthrough will allow us to create a truly meaningful quantum computer not in decades, as some have predicted, but in years.

The qubits created with topoconductors are faster, more reliable, and smaller.

They are 1/100th of a millimeter, meaning we now have a clear path to a million-qubit processor.

Imagine a chip that can fit in the palm of your hand yet is capable of solving problems that even all the computers on Earth today combined could not!

quote:

It leverages the world’s first topoconductor, a breakthrough type of material which can observe and control Majorana particles to produce more reliable and scalable qubits, which are the building blocks for quantum computers.

In the same way that the invention of semiconductors made today’s smartphones, computers and electronics possible, topoconductors and the new type of chip they enable offer a path to developing quantum systems that can scale to a million qubits and are capable of tackling the most complex industrial and societal problems, Microsoft said.

quote:

The topoconductor, or topological superconductor, is a special category of material that can create an entirely new state of matter – not a solid, liquid or gas but a topological state. This is harnessed to produce a more stable qubit that is fast, small and can be digitally controlled, without the tradeoffs required by current alternatives. A new paper published Wednesday in Nature outlines how Microsoft researchers were able to create the topological qubit’s exotic quantum properties and also accurately measure them, an essential step for practical computing.

i'm old enough to remember being slack-jawed at the iomega Bernoulli Box

explanation for you millenials

quote:

An Iomega Bernoulli drive, often called a "Bernoulli Box," is a type of removable storage device that uses a flexible magnetic disk spinning at high speed, leveraging the Bernoulli principle to keep the read/write head close to the disk surface, providing a reliable and relatively high-capacity storage solution for its time, particularly compared to standard floppy disks; it was known for its durability against head crashes due to the disk's flexible nature that naturally lifted away from the head when power was lost

This is a needed threshold for quantum computers to deliver transformative, real-world solutions – such as breaking down microplastics into harmless byproducts or inventing self-healing materials for construction, manufacturing or healthcare.

True question is power consumption. We don’t have the generation capacity for the chips we are producing now.

Every day I am closer to being convinced we are an NPC in some entity's rpg.

I believe the current theory is that Quantum Computers will consume significantly less power than current computers

meh..Let me know when they start making Zapp's chips in Gramercy again and I'll get excited.

Yea, but can it play Cyberpunk w path tracing enabled at 4k resolution at 120 FPS?

I seriously don’t understand any of this shite.

But when I read about it combined with AI and these tech guys talking about solving “societal” problems all I can think of is some dystopian cross between Terminator and The Matrix.

I can guarantee you someone has already played Doom on it

Just get one up and running and use it to figure out the power consumption issues.

AI chips are very power hungry. Creating them takes power too. While these chips could consume less during use, what’s required to make them?

The technical aspects? very few.

At my level? If MSFT goes to 1,000 to 1,500 a share I'm buying an island.
