Before layoffs, did they eliminate the latte machines, ping pong tables, and relaxation pods?

I think I've disagreed with you in the past, but I'm with you here.

I'd love to live in a world where everyone abidedbby the rules, nobody hoarded power, and we all came together to take care of everyone. We don't, however.

If anything even remotely negative happens in a formal capacity in a workplace, start looking elsewhere. There's no reason for a company to waste time to document things if they don't want a paper trail to cut your arse loose as soon as it benefits them.

You get the same benefit. You can leave whenever you want. You don't owe them anything other than labor, and they don't owe you anything other than remuneration.

Stop with all this moral BS. There's a facade of society, but these companies still play by the rules that would govern everyone if there were no guardrails.

META burned a few billion dollars+ on VR that was third rate.

It may got the way of MySpace over the next few years if Zuck keeps it up.

But were the reviews accurate. Just because they were subpar doesn’t mean they weren’t deserved…..

Why? You can fire anyone without cause.

Paywall so did not read.

But first thought is ~20% of a company will get subpar reviews in normal year, and a company of 50k+ employees, "thousands of employees subpar reviews" heading makes sense. Always.

not some "metaverse" side project almost nobody cares about.

facebook was just facebook. A social media website/app. Then they bought IG and from what I heard on some podcast awhile back there are some pretty cool things that could come out of Meta. The best way to explain it is that people will not have to be dialed into their phone all the time for everything. One example is driving. Eventually no one will hve to set up their GPS on their phone, etc, etc. The lines you see on your phone GPS when driving, that will be on your windshield which will be like a glass/screen.

And the VR glasses that are used right now, they are working on putting that into something much smaller, but a lot of it is centered around social engagement and correcting some of the problems that came about with smartphones

Every large corporation could cut the bottom 20% of workers and not feel a thing. The government could cut the bottom 70%. There are always people laying on someone’s leg.

The sad part about this type of system is that the reviews don’t have to be “subpar”. They simply grade on a curve, and force x% to fall into the subpar category. It’s incredibly demoralizing for good employees. The dirty little secret is that if women and/or minorities complain to HR about it after the review, the rating is changed behind the scene. I’ve seen it done multiple times.

META probably has thousands of employees that are subpar.

So they are pretty much like any other big company?

Was Zuckerberg one of them? He is the one most deserving of a subpar review.

That’s called grading on the curve. It’s what we had before participation medals.

There are 100 jobs and 150 employees. Rank em. What in the hell else are you going to do.

Sounds good but there’s more to it. The employees aren’t told where they’re ranked or given concrete goals to improve their rank.

Performance is only a small part of the ranking. Maintaining diversity goals, minimizing payroll by firing employees with higher salaries regardless of productivity, and rehiring workers as contract labor or hiring offshore workers are all part of the mix. Also, there’s the human element where managers have favorites who get better reviews.

You can be a high performer with experience and certifications but that can work against you since management has budget goals and they’ll be held accountable if they don’t hit that goal. If the team’s performance suffers, it’s the employees, not the manager, who are held accountable.

It’s frustrating but I have to juggle all these considerations since corporations are no longer meritocracies.

Taking a play out of XOM's playbook

XOM is the OG at this shady game. Employees with years of good performance reviews got blindsided back in 2020/2021 when the company needed to reduce workforce to maintain the dividend.
