Taking a play out of XOM's playbook
Meta and other Silicon Valley companies have been hiring ex-XOMers left and right. A couple months ago it was almost daily that I saw someone on LinkedIn posting that they were moving from XOM to Silicon Valley

Would you prefer that the company go broke so that the lowest performing quiet quitters can keep their jobs? Or maybe they should all draw straws to see who gets to stay. It’s the real fricking world. You aren’t owed a job.
Some of this has impacts on things like unemployment. Try collecting unemployment in some states where you were let go for cause. Some companies would rather make something up to let you go for cause making you ineligible for unemployment than be stuck with the hit to their unemployment insurance. That is something I don’t understand for long term employees since they have paid into system as a hidden tax. I know unemployment can be a game for some short term workers who maximize it to their advantage.

Or…
“Since the start of 2022, Mark Zuckerberg has lost nearly as much money as Warren Buffett has to his name, as Meta, the company he controls, has invested billions of dollars into an immersive “metaverse.” Bloomberg's Billionaires Index calculates that Zuckerberg's net worth has dropped over $100 billion year to date.”
Never forget…
“During the 2020 Election, Mark Zuckerberg poured $350 million into CTCL, a left-leaning non-profit run by former Obama staffers. CTCL then funneled this money directly to local Boards of Elections, completely bypassing any accountability or oversight from state legislatures or local governments.”

Doubtful
Tech grows haphazardly in boom times and trims haphazardly in tight times. Been this way forever.
And let’s not pretend like Meta has been a bastion of wise decision-making over the years, or a model of ethical behavior. They have thrown billions of dollars at dead end investment after dead end investment and now that money is tight, they are being forced to recognize their core business is still just building addictive algorithms that feed people content that reinforces what they want to believe/see, selling your data, and collecting advertising dollars.

pretty sure GE popularized this tactic with the "rank and yank". Boeing seems to have copied this tactic as well.

Their core businesses are Facebook and Instagram, not some "metaverse" side project almost nobody cares about.
I think stepping out and putting it on the line is probably the only admirable quality meta has.

Article is behind a paywall. But, something had to be left out. When you file unemployment there’s usually three options RIF, Layoff, Quit/Fired. (If the first two are selected the benefits are usually auto approved and Employer has to contest, if the 3rd is selected, they’re auto denied and employee has to contest)
Unless they’re cutting people loose immediately after the performance review, they can’t classify it as a layoff. Even if they did, for cause is a stretch since performance review is subjective, and they would also need to show the individual was unwilling or unable to be coached.
Regardless, I doubt meta employees care much about UI. The subpar reviews probably ensure they don’t qualify for bonuses/fringe benefits.

Though I tend to not believe anything that comes from these tech companies and their practices, this makes sense.

I would assume Meta is a sought after job because of its name brand. If that is the case then they probably have a bunch of people that are or perceive themselves to be overachievers. You then have a situation where everyone thinks they are awesome. In that situation, being awesome is just average compared to your peers. Being ok at your job is below average. That realization is tough on people, especially if they have ever been coddled. I don’t know if Meta is in that boat or not but it’s a common issue for companies that get to hire the best candidates.

Would need to know what they all got on their previous reviews.

I can completely see how Facebook could have thousands of subpar employees.
Why is this not believable?

I watched some videos from a "day in the life" of these West Coast tech companies and these kids may have been doing an hour of work a day if they do any.
Show up at 9:30, eat breakfast. Work for an hour, break for fun stuff then lunch. More fun stuff, work for a few minutes, leave with coworkers for some cultural enrichment in their Disney like environment.
Most of their day was spent "collaborating" while doing yoga and "recharging".

This is standard behavior for a large corporation

Not sure I've ever been contacted by "Meta," but I do get spammed by Amazon recruiters a lot, even after their layoffs. I've always ignored these emails, because I reckon Amazon is probably fully of self-important dorks. Of course, now I can ignore them because I reckon Amazon is probably fully of self-important dorks and they make them drive into an office three days per week.
There's some seriously weird and misguided stuff going on at those "elite tech companies."

Correct, this is not a new thing. Non tech companies have been using this system for years.

Phucking awesome. Go WOKE Go Broke.

Evaluations are a scam. Nothing like waiting a whole year to state that an employee us subpar. Supervisors are merely company scum not having the employee's back. I can never figure out why companies advertise the have the greatest employees, yet they rank them on a curve. So glad I never had to deal with that crap.

I would imagine these are mostly people "working" from home. Productivity has gone down.

Look-at-me index and list is all that crap is with some “Hey….you want to buy some mlm crap?” tossed in for good measure.
