The “no elective procedures” thing has zero justification now that hospitals and vents aren’t anywhere near being overwhelmed

Preemptively (before the area had a non-manageable problem with hospital capacity) cancelling everything seems to have no justification.

I can see cancelling all elective procedures if you get to a point that you are turning away emergency cases for lack of room, lack of PPE, or whatever.

But what was the sense in doing it before they were anywhere near that point?

Just think for childrens hospitals. They are getting hammered. No elective surgeries and very few from Covid-19.

i hope i'm being dramatic and maybe even fear mongering a tad: but in this household, we are putting away every cent possible until this potential economic shite storm has blown over. now is not the time for frivolous spending.

Medical personnel were not the ones telling people to learn to code.

Those were the journalists.

Government mandates have had a negative financial effect on 97 percent of practices, whether indirectly or directly.

Fixed.

A large part of that was "elective" surgery and procedures.

I think maybe all this pain might be worth it in the long run if it gets manufacturing of medications and PPE ‘s back in the US or at least in North America. It’s insane that we have outsourced these important items to an ideological enemy.
Another thing that needs to be looked at are the expiration dates applied to PPE’s.I remember our unit throwing away large quantities of gowns away because of the expiration dates on the packages, these were non-sterile gowns sealed in plastic in a climate controlled room.I felt like it was a scam perpetrated on medical facilities by Cardinal Health which seems to be the largest supplier of these type of items.
I also wondered about the expiration dates of some sterile items such as cotton tipped swabs, they are in well sealed packages also in climate controlled areas. How would the sterility be comprimised if they were stored in proper manner.I remember we had to throw away a lot of them once.

They're the most useless group of people by profession that exists in this country today.

And yes, even worse than politicians and lawyers.

Outpatient clinical practices have been seeing as much as 60% decrease in volume.

Pediatrics, for example, rely on "well visit" type volume for newborn screening/annual check ups/shots/etc.

Parents just haven't been bring their kids in.

Oklahoma, Texas, and Alaska will be soon allowing elective surgeries beginning this week provided it does not hinder hospital bed capacity. I believe Alaska starts May 4th.
