I'm enjoying the effects of some green crack dabs right now, but cannabis's health effects are a double-edged sword IMO. It can relieve stress and anxiety in some situations but make it way worse in others. It's not addictive in the traditional sense but I've seen way too many people rely on it as a long term mental crutch/escape from shite they probably should just face instead.

So just like alcohol, but it helps people with various health issues? Or like opiates without the addiction and nasty side effects?

It’s not a miracle cure, but it does help some and sure as shite shouldn’t be illegal.

Four years ago John Boehner got on CNBC and talked about his change of heart regarding marijuana legalization. LINK

It may pale in size in comparison to big pharma, but let's not pretend that the narrative around marijuana isn't being shaped by monied interests on both sides.

In that same clip, Kevin Murphy, the CEO of Acreage Holdings, an investment firm betting on marijuana and lobbying for its legalization, says it out loud: his firm is "medically focused" but "we don't discriminate against people who want to use the plant recreationally because we have found that more than 50% of people using cannabis recreationally are self-medicating, they just don't want to go through the rigamarole of getting a card or a prescription."

They absolutely are invested monetarily in people continuing to perpetuate the notion that marijuana is a wonder drug for all varieties of ailments. Big Pharma sucks but don't think for a second that Big Tobacco Part 2 won't capitalize on the discontent with pharma and the healthcare system as a whole and take it to the bank.

A recent study found that medical marijuana fails to improve symptoms of pain, anxiety and depression and effectively doubles the risk of developing addictive symptoms and cannabis use disorder (CUD).

But yes, I do think the idea that regular (ie, dads with wives and kids who live in the burbs and work professional jobs) people are regularly smoking weed is exaggerated.

It’s probably not actually. I was surprised as I got older to find the number of my friends parents that smoked pot.

And now that I’m older a lot of dudes with kids smoke pot. Not all of them. Some don’t because they get tested. But they would if they didn’t.

I do live in New Orleans though. I seriously don’t know a single person here that doesn’t or hasn’t smoked pot. I was even surprised when I had a vape pen and my buddies wife that is a lawyer whipped out hers too.

It reads contradictory - but there’s a difference between what a study reports and what ppl tell their doctors

The study says it doesn’t help - it’s a ‘formal’ study

The info that says it does help is from people reporting that to their doctors - not a ‘formal’ study

Personally - all drugs and alcohol should be legal - if you hurt someone else while high or drunk - the consequences should be severe

So you agree, alcohol should be illegal?

Its not misleading to point out that there is something already “legal” which does more harm than anything mentioned here.

So you think alcohol should be illegal?

I mentioned nothing about legality of either, simply that you are distracting from the fact that there is no scientific evidence that marijuana is the miracle drug that it is often made out to be nor is it completely harmless.

I'm fairly ambivalent on legality at this point.

My wife's family had a big family gathering party last year when the lockdowns started relaxing before delta hit and everyone got crazy again. We took out our vape pen since we don't really drink and her family drinks a lot so we wanted to keep up somehow.

Once we did that other people took out vape pens and her cousin went home and came back with a massive bag of d8 edibles and one of those old school dugout one-hitters. Far more people ended up taking edibles at a family event than I ever thought I'd see in my lifetime. One of her cousins got so fricked up she could barely talk and then tried to run away and hide

It was a lot of fun and I'm actually looking forward to more family events at the in-laws now

Until proven otherwise in a formal drug trial using the same statistical methods as employed to determine the possible effectiveness of other pharmaceuticals, any perceived health benefit of marijuana could be nothing more than a placebo effect, if you think it helps you it does.

This is all it really comes down to. Even if there is a risk of being addicted to bud, give me that addict over a pill head 10 times out of 10

“take 14 pharmaceuticals instead”

I really don’t have a dog in this fight, haven’t smoked any marijuana in 50 years.I really don’t know if it’s good or bad.I have read in journals that it is helpful in cancer patients on chemotherapy.

I will say this, any study relating to medical matters is suspect.I would guarantee that this study was paid for by drug companies. The results will be presented to physicians to entice them to write scripts for their drug they are peddling instead of medical marijuana.
The whole frickin system has been totally corrupted.

Funny thing happened at hospital I worked at.We had random urine screens and a long time excellent nurse tested positive.Voila! No more random urine tests.
