It was a higher trust society back then. Parents weren't as worried about their kids being out and about. It was still commonly understood that independence was a good thing.
Now, thanks to media sensationalism and the 24/7 news cycle, people are always afraid that something awful is going to happen to their kid. This has created a low-trust society that hides indoors and eschews real-world contact.
Neuroticism is through the roof and needs to be reined in for the common good.

I don’t have kids but
I live on the corner, kid gets driven 2 houses down to sit in running vehicle until bus shows up
Last year (guessing kid was in kindergarten) mom even hauled scooter so kid could ride circles around running vehicle until bus came
My arse froze outside in the winter waiting for the bus to show

Fifth grade?
You back then and your kid now should have after school jobs by age 10…
Lazy generations, all of ya!

I don't know what it was about the bully thing but I never had a problem even though I was a smaller kid. I had a reputation of being a little psycho though, maybe that helped.
i mostly stayed off their radar but even so, there were times they would zero in on me..i clearly remember one time they had cut off access to my house from both direction
thought never occurred to me to ask a grown up for help

If you don't like it...why don't you make yours ride the bus?
Mine started riding the bus at 8 and he loves it. He is actually mad if he misses the bus and has to be driven to school. Not to mention we on gas as the school is 20 miles one way.
When I did pick him up there was a mile long line of moms waiting. Some got there and hour early so they would be first in line to pick up braxxlyn ..its ridiculous

i cant complain about how our school handles it; they have every single parent back into parking spaces and kill their engines.
when the kids come out, we make our way over to our car and one of the Fathers 'blesses' each car when its time to pull out one by one until the campus is empty. whole process is done in 15 minutes. very orderly and efficient.

I think about when I went to school in the 1980s. We were straight up cruel to each other. It was brutal on the school yard.

and we moved to an area with a bad public school system recently so we switched to a private school; up until 4th grade he took the bus so he got to experience that as well.

no shite. and in the halls..and the bathrooms...none of the school staff ever seemed to be around for the fun.
that was just the way things were. you never knew what you were going to get into coming home from school.

We had a kid poop his pants in 5th grade wrestling. I wasn't there, wasn't friends with anyone who was, and never knew if it was a full blown terd or he just sharted a little bit, but I'll be damned if we didn't call him shite pants until he graduated HS.

I’ll admit I got my share of shite, but I also gave it too.

We have seen that in our lives, but history tells us there are no guarantees that that will continue to be true.

Dropped off by bus 3-4 hours before my parents got home. Had a key to the house. Ate a nutter butter then road the bike, skateboarded, threw pine cones at cars, etc. My parents would get home and not even look for me. I would show back up at home and my mom or dad would already have dinner ready. Mom always had some sort of easy throw in a casserole dish meal baked in the oven or dad would have some sort of pea, white rice, and a protein. If it was a special day (read: parents both had a tough day at work), we had Popeyes chicken or pizza delivery. On my mom's day off, it would be a delicious cajun dish.
I was truly a latch key kid. I've been leaving my kids at home a lot because of this, but they don't have the courage to do the stuff I did. They stay locked inside and hound us with text messages and phone calls. They always get picked up by a parent or grandparent from school and taken home. And we go to almost all their schools event and athletic events. I was always carpooling or taking a bus to after school functions. Totally different life than what I had.

BREAKING NEWS
It's the way of the world. You'll understand one day when you stop taking online forums so seriously and find a pretty little midget gal to marry.
That shouldn't be hard for you to understand if you weren't a perpetually bitter, insecure little bitch who's always angry behind your screen. Try to keep up (not physically, obviously, but you can figure it out).

This in a nutshell. And my parents had a totally different experience than I did heading out to school in the 50's & 60's. Their young school days were in the late 20's to early 40's.
