Me either... and people keep talking about metal detectors... that’d be even worse, you’d have to take out EVERYTHING that’s metal to get through security

Hotels won't check luggage contents. There are too many damn hotels to make this even a remote possibility. The ONLY way I could see it happening is if there's going to be a big event like this one again and the hotel directly overlooks the event. But that would cause people to not even want to stay at the hotel.

Here’s what we know:

• Mr. Paddock was found dead on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, the police said, and authorities believe he committed suicide.

• At least 10 guns were found in Mr. Paddock’s hotel room, including several rifles.

• Mr. Paddock was a resident of Mesquite, Nev., about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas. Quinn Averett, a spokesman for the Mesquite police, said the department has had no previous contact with Mr. Paddock.

• The Las Vegas police also had nothing more than a routine traffic violation on Mr. Paddock, according to Kevin McMahill, the department’s undersheriff.

• Mr. Paddock’s residence was expected to be searched Monday morning.

• A companion of Mr. Paddock’s was questioned by the Las Vegas police but was not believed to have been involved in the shooting.

• The shooting began around 10:08 p.m. local time, the police said. The authorities estimated that 406 people were transported to hospitals. There were more than 22,000 people at the concert.

What we don’t know:

• The suspect’s motive is unclear.

• It is not yet clear whether the suspect planned the shooting alone or was working with others.

• The authorities have not announced whether the suspect had any ties to domestic or international terrorist groups.

Probably so. I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner. Vegas is the perfect target. Dozens of sky scrapers, lots of foot traffic and large outdoor gatherings, smaller police presence than Manhattan, less security. Thankful it was only one shooter and no IED's...could've been much worse.

Large hotels in cities could easily be required to check luggage. If you can't obtain insurance, you have to adapt. Guarantee you most carriers with a large portfolio of hotels are freaking out and will respond to this harshly, with requirements galore.

it sucks but it's something we see all the time

I'm not a fan of airlines doing it either. But I can guarantee their insurance carriers are. And if it saves lives it is just something I will have to deal with in the future. Doesn't mean that I like it or that this was foreseeable, just likely to become part of society in the near future.

I would say that for a substantial portion of people staying at hotels in Vegas their luggage has already been checked by airports.

Are we going to discuss conspiracies yet? I found it really odd that Cox, Charter, and AT&T all went down across the country at the same time just hours and in some cases minutes before this attack.

After the attack, everything works.
