If sources couldn’t be anonymous it would be impossible to break a story. Two independent sources is what is needed to run a story.

I think what upgrayedd is trying to say is stories typically read “two sources within the Bureau of Prisons” vs. the now common “two sources close to the situation”.
I think this journalist got a little loose with their wording, though. WSJ still maintains journalistic integrity for the most part.

It’s gotten more prevalent since trump but it has always been acceptable to maintain the anonymity of your sources.
