Pilot did a great job but from what im told landing with two engines out like that is something they practice in the sim each year but still very difficult. From what im told by a c130 pilot.

J's fly well on 2 engines, it's practiced in the sim and in the plane (some Majcoms). They might have been fairly heavy-weight with gas which would affect performance.

They had a lot more going on than just 2 engines out. Missing the external tank between 3 & 4, they were probably losing a bunch of fuel, possible flight control issues. Kudos for the crew for getting it on the ground.

Here's a link to the center audio- I think the silence between calls might have been cut or the center controller needs to chill. I would have ignored the guy after a couple of calls. They had their hands full and chatty-Cathy kept bugging. LINK

Of course. How else do you get an airplane that big out of a crop field?

Not quite scrap metal yet! Amazing what they will do with that.

Is the $100M price tag the manufacturing cost, or does that include the engineering, design etc rolled into the number of planes?

I looked it up and its resemblance to the USS Merrimack is uncanny.

ETA: Now I'm reading the Wiki page for this thing and it jumps right to the Monitor / Merrimack thing.

That’s exactly what I thought as well....that’s a freshly planted field and soon to be a superfund site.

And how about a 600' long, "stealth" ship? That has to be the absolute stupidest idea in the history of warfare.

"Ooooh no one will ever notice this 32,000,000 pound object moving around at a full 30 knots. It's got a reduced radar signature!"

Bitch I don't need radar to spot a $7 billion de-facto battleship. Frickin' retards.

Did I mention that it doesn't really have guns?

Also, why didn't the tanker lower his landing gear? Or are they just buried in manure?

I have no experience with the C-130, but would venture to guess the ditching checklist calls for it to land with the gear up on an unprepared surface. Or, quite possibly, the gear didn’t come down due to the nature of their emergency. All speculation on my part.

lands safely in a farm field and most likely will be flying again relatively soon?

How are you going to get it out of the field without cutting it up and putting it on trucks? Magic it back to the airbase?

ETA: Also, there's the issue of over stressing of the airframe which is a distinct possibility in this case. At some point, it's cheaper and easier just to send Boeing a change order and add a plane to their current contract.

ETA2: Lockheed, not Boeing.

A bit, yes.

But they do (kind of), and they're the ones using them!

This photo kind of reminds me of the infamous MC-130 crash at FOB Q-West back in 04. Good friend of mine had to write that report. Yikes.

Happens more often than you think

My father was a crew chief for a Huey in Germany. Don’t know if its the same way today but 1970’s Army said the head mechanic should also be the door gunner.

Dad’s bird throws an alarm but shows no indication of problem. Young butter bar pilot immediately dives the helo into the German countryside performing a hard landing ripping the skids off and essentially totaling the aircraft. My dad was concussed but OK.

Command grabbed the pilot from the scene and he was never heard from again. Investigation showed it was a bad fuse for a non-flight critical part.
