Mardi Gras Krewes expect big changes to parades in 2021

"A number of ideas are being talked about, including: Increasing the number of barricades used to essentially have them the length of the parade routes, having security walk with the floats to dissuade over aggressive spectators, changing the routes to only include the largest of streets, having all krewes take exactly the same routes and placing some type of barrier that would prevent people on the streets from getting in between the multi-part floats."
WWL TV
Williams also offered the idea of having some type of barrier in the gaps between the tandem floats.
“Maybe a flexible guardrail between the tandem sections that could actually have a kill switch that would make the tractor stop if someone hit the guard rail.”
Bacchus Captain Clark Brennan said he would like to see barricades all along the route, though he realizes it will be expensive.

Reactionary governmental policies are always the best governmental policies.

All of that will never stop people from doing stupid things.
This is the city taking advantage of the tragedy to gain more control over freedom

Who will get the barricade contract for Mardi Gras 2021 will be the biggest winner here!

When it comes to incidents with parade goers, is the parade goers, or the peeps on the float instigating it?

I feel like we all already knew this was coming

Fewer fatalities would be a positive.

Pay someone to walk between the tandems and that’s it.

Krewes need to go the way of Comus and drop parades and instead have creepy-arse balls.

It’s been almost 40 years since last time it happened. Surprised it didn’t happen more often with how stupid people act 10 inches away from a float.

If they go to the traditional uptown route for all parades, I wonder if Zulu will also be forced to adhere. Like Endymion, their route is not the typical Uptown route.

The only idea I’m in favor of is having chaperones with the floats. Barricading all of magazine street is an atrocious idea and unifying the parade routes would ruin some of the parades.
Really hope the city stays out of this.

No fricking shot Zulu would ever go the Uptown route.

More barricades will likely cause more injuries because crowds won’t be able to flex or pass across the streets and get stuck. It’s a horrible idea. The most unsafe/trapped I’ve ever felt in my life was at Endymion along the areas where there’s nothing but barricades and you can’t cross the route and you can’t go backwards because there’s multiple rows of people behind you. Also having them all do the same routes is atrocious. Zulu Endymion and bacchus going down different routes is part of what makes Mardi Gras special and fun and weird. These were freak accidents after decades of safe Mardi Gras. There is barely a need for any change other than to create a flexible covering for tandem floats.

New mayor, new metro council, new police chief... In other words, things that will never happen.
