They should add a gangway connection between the float sections. Similar to the flexible couplings you see on subway cars. It could be integrated into the overall float design.

Adding security to walk along that section seems dangerous. It's not the same as walking next to a band of people. If the chaperone gets pushed into the band they don't get rolled over. If the security gets pushed in between the tandems it's bad news.

They should pass a murder law while they're at it.

Maybe the city building inspectors office should sign off on tandem float safety?

How difficult is it to engineer a skirt around the whole float an inch above the ground?

Spacewalks/Bouncehouses were invented in Nola.

Make a skirt of out them with a kevlar base to prevent rips and such. Air inflated and keeps a seal with the road.

Uptown route height issue needs to be addressed too. d'Etat took a kid out the other night when a large sheet broke off the top of the float and hit the poor dude.

Fix the Hard Rock first, then worry about this.

Barricading the whole the route will kill a lot of the atmosphere up town, especially for the first weekend.

How about focusing on no more buildings collapsing and getting dead dead bodies out of the ones that have, let the Mardi Gras Krewes police themselves. They don’t need an incompetent Mayor and her half ignorant Police Chief that speaks like he’s in the 3rd grade telling Krewes that have been having parades since the 1800’s how to do it safely.

The last thing I want to see is a fully barricaded route...Mardi Gras is NOT the Rose Parade and we don't want that sterility...

as an Endymion rider, where I would like to see barricades is from Carrolton down to the high rise, with some enforcement to keep the crowds behind the barricades...

I've had people hold their kids to reach out into the float to steal throws...and of course the always pleasant

BAM, BAM, BAM....."GIMME A BLINKY BEAD"

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. The woman is the prime example of that. Darwinism at its finest. The guy on the other hand was just a random thing that happened and the float wasnt even a tandem float.

When it comes to incidents with parade goers, is the parade goers, or the peeps on the float instigating it?

engine kill switch isn't the same as an emergency brake. Momentum will still keep the float and tractor moving forward, for at least a few feet

Yes but just shutting off the engine will still send a jolt to the float, I am a float driver any sudden change of power whether brakes or just simply pushing in the clutch quickly will cause a jolt and when drunk that jolt is alot harder to stay standing from than you think

DO NOT WANT

I understand they are a necessity in some areas, especially around reviewing stands, but restricting the free-flow will lead to a negative experience

Well here's the thing, if its barricaded and the police enforce it, then its safer.

I can care less about a negative experience because people cant free flow across the route in front of floats, that's the reason those peopme were killed really.

If they weren't allowed bear the floats they are alive today.

Sorry it may not be the ideal thing for some but it would definitely make things safer on the route and easier on drivers and bands alike

By some, we mean 99.99% of all people that have attended Mardi Gras over the last half century.

My first thought as well ... every freaking marching band has them ... so why not grab a few folks and have them walk down the sides with a safety reflective vest on or something
