Holy shite did they poll a school of kindergartners for this idea?
Other ideas included censors on all the float wheels that detected if they were running over humans and fricking laser beams that zapped intruders that got too close to floats or 610 stompers.

Unloading the burden on the organizations will not fix this.
Everyone has to take responsibility to prevent incidents like this.
- Spectators should stay behind barricades and not gather
around floats.
- Police should keep everyone behind barricades and
should stand facing the crowds, not the floats.
- Riders should refrain from throwing to anyone in the
street.

The best idea is actually the kill switch idea. After that they can just switch to self driving tractors that use sensors and get rid of the drivers. I wonder if parade tractor driver is a union job in New Orleans?

Forcing all the parades down the same route fully barricaded is going to cause crowd safety issues. It will cause more people to camp out and increase density in those congested areas.
Maybe it is just my perception, but when the parades took varying routes around the city, the crowds never seemed that bad in anyone area - obviously certain areas were more crowded than others. The varied routes caused people to watch in different areas, and if they wanted to see more than one parade, not set up a campsite so they could move spots quicker.

No way would I stand trapped between a barricade and a mass of drunk people pushing to get in front of me.

Get ready for the lawsuits of riders that fall and injure themselves when an idiots hits the gaurdtqil causing the tractor to stop abruptly and sends riders flying.

Then the riders should’ve been wearing their harness.

The second the drunks find out that yanking on the netting causes the float to come to a screeching halt, guess what they are going to do every block?

Harness wont stop you from falling forward to the ground on the float. It will only prevent you from falling over the edge of the float to the ground.

Walkers similar to those with bands going with the floats and flexible barriers between tandems seem very reasonable. That would mitigate a good bit of the risk w/o changing the parade experience and adding much cost.

An engine kill switch isn't the same as an emergency brake. Momentum will still keep the float and tractor moving forward, for at least a few feet.

barricades used to essentially have them the length of the parade routes
DO NOT WANT
I understand they are a necessity in some areas, especially around reviewing stands, but restricting the free-flow will lead to a negative experience.
Has nothing to do with barricades being unsafe, those posters saying that aren't making much sense. If they were unsafe, why are they being used now, without incident, along parts of the route?

Imagine the line of Chads waiting to stake their ground for Endymion if it were to be moved uptown. That’s a safety concern in itself.

How about just banning idiots/potential Darwin Award winners from coming to the parades.

I had a friend in college that got drunk and tried to hop a fence to take a leak in someone’s yard. He was impaled (a little, missed all vital taint stuff-ER visit, no stay)
They should take down all gates/fences in NO. Then it would be safe.

You're right. We also need to electrify the netting to ward off drunken pranksters.

Just put a net made of bungie type cord between the tandem sections.

Naw brah, cudgels. Harken back to the old days of a posse in new orleans.
