You talking about the Hard Rock or Mardi Gras?

Sorry it may not be the ideal thing for some but it would definitely make things safer on the route and easier on drivers and bands alike
Just because it’s safer doesn’t mean it’s the right thing for Mardi Gras. The whole celebration is inherently unsafe by it’s nature but has been celebrated without major incident for decades.

All it takes is for one drunk dad to push the “security” because he got get mad the “security” pushed little Johnny away from the float and then we got another dead man.
Terrible idea to have someone walking in between each tandem float. Will definitely lead to more deaths.

having security walk with the floats to dissuade over aggressive spectators
I know in Baton Rouge it's required for St. Patty's day and Spanish Town, not sure about the other parades. Even the New Roads parades had walkers for each float yesterday. They aren't police or anything. They are typically volunteers or people paid by the float. But it's easy to have someone there to keep the crowd back some.

So who’s liable if something happens?

How difficult is it to engineer a skirt around the whole float an inch above the ground?
Then you can't go over a bump or pothole more than an 1" which rules out every street in new orleans. You also need to be able to go over railroad tracks, etc so there has to be some clearance. I'm sure the folks building these float have the clearance down the best it can be. As for the front of the float, it has the trailer tongue that needs to swing side to side for turning which rules out closing in that area.

My first thought as well ... every freaking marching band has them ... so why not grab a few folks and have them walk down the sides with a safety reflective vest on or something
Because at least one of those walkers would be killed in the first year, I don’t think some of you realize how packed some of these parades get in some areas. It’s nuts to butts 20 people deep in some areas with people right up on the floats.
Putting some type of barricade between the tandems seems like a good idea, but idk how these floats are configured. I know some have exits in the back of the float, so putting something between the floats may block an exit for the first float in the tandem and create a fire hazard.

This seems like the areas that need to be barricaded. It's hard to argue that the barricade will cause injuries, but allowing people to push 20 deep right up against the float is acceptable.

Protecting a marching band or walking group that no one is trying to get to is much different than protecting a float from 100’s and 1000’s of people for miles and hours that want nothing but to get to isn’t even comparable
To even suggest having each float have multiple people walk along each side for every parade is the most idiot idea I’ve ever heard of

These are truck parades and much smaller events.
They need something between the tandems and some type of guard below the front of each section including the front so you can’t go under the front of the section. Do that and be done with it.

Barricading the whole the route will kill a lot of the atmosphere up town, especially for the first weekend.
This Would kill Mardi Gras; would Never be the same. No More Barricades!! Atrocious idea.

Usually the crowd. The float riders are on that float the entire route. They don't get off & mingle in the street.
And everybody wants throws so the crowd tends to press towards the floats especially when stopped.
It's very rare but tragic.

Agree completely. This would ruin much of the atmosphere from ponchartrain expressway all the way up the route to Tchoupitoulas. It would also cause more injuries than it prevents for sure.

Electric fence all along the route should do it.

News flash....this used to be the norm......some Krewes continue to do it.
I can only assume it was stopped because of cost.
I promise you it's coming back. Bacchus had them for most floats Sunday as did Orpheus.

Maybe but it used to be a thing until the krewes got much larger and costs got higher.

Not arguing that. But the crowds at spanish town are pretty thick. Those places and the turns are barricaded like many parades.

As long as you have something pulling that float, the front will need to be open so the tongue can move from side to side.

That's nice, but nowhere close to the crowds at some of the Nola parades.
Could you imagine walking between the tandem floats in a crowd like this? Who would volunteer to do that?
