The happiness level of each state was determined by calculating the weighted average of the 30 metrics, using data from four research studies that identified correlations between these key metrics and happiness.

Was hoping to find the specific metrics for LA, especially when I saw AK was 49th and a full 4 points higher; but did find their scoring system:

This is dumb as shite.

I can see how Texas would be ranked lower if ideal weather was a metric.
Summers are brutal

I find it hard to believe that Minnesota is the “happiest” state.
Just the negative 30 aspect of winter has to be a deduction.

It's not, Hawaii is ...according to this site... but it's hard to disagree with that one

aint no fricking way I could be happy in a state that gets cold as frick.

At least we’re consistent, we’re always last or close to it with Mississippi, Bama, and ArKansas

New Englanders always seem miserable to me, I don’t believe that.

With few exceptions, the further right a state is, the less happy it appears in their chart. Hmmm
Thats because these criteria are chosen by 24 year old white girls who have never been in those right leaning states.
Utah, SC, Idaho, NE, SD are all solidly "right" and are among the happiest. And there's many more that are up there in FL, GA, KS, AZ, etc. that also scored well.
Looks to me like they actually left politics out on this one.

Maryland being second happiest smells like some BS. Ain't no way a state that eats butter, lemon, and salt boiled chicken is that damn happy.
Came here to say something similar. Would love to know where all these happy people in Maryland are hiding. It's a pretty miserable place in my experience.
List is total BS. Tennessee, Texas, and Indiana should be ranked happier. Maryland, California, Massachusetts, and Illinois less happy.

Maryland being second is comical lol we go there every Summer to visit my wife’s friends and family. Baltimore is in the top 5 worst cities in America and the harbor is ok I guess but not the areas near Baltimore or DC. Her friends live in the wealthier areas in the suburbs but there is nothing special about them compared to other wealthy suburbs. This has to be trolling

That really explains a lot about this place. Especially the poli baws.

Happiness is a temporary emotion based off metrics outside your control. Joy is contentment and satisfaction with what they have been dealt and making the most of it, i.e. Hurricane Parties, Second Lines, etc.
I tried to explain this to a friend from Pittsburgh who was in town... we went to the Texas club a few days before a major hurricane was about to hit... I mentioned to her how everybody was enjoying every second of what they had, because in a few days, it could all change for the worse... she didnt get it, because shes never lost everything
