And many of these places wouldn't accept cash during the plandemic since it may pass on grandma killing diseases.

Well yea, nobody wants some dickhead kid spreading jizz on their lunch.
I mash the no thanks button or the red button anyway. I'll take the risk and keep my $3.
It's so fricking annoying that they put me in that position, but frick em. Tips are for servers, not order takers.

back when I was in the biz it was common for the tips to be pooled and split up evenly at the end of the night

same.
but I base my tip off the quality of the service.
they all get at least 15% (would have to be absolutely atrocious to not give at least that), but if they are really good at what they do an exceptional job, the tip goes up.

I would prefer it if we eliminated tipping and restaurants just increased their prices by 20%.

Yes, we are fed up with it in general and specifically the proliferation of it into places it doesn’t belong. Buy a $15 beer at a game, screen asks for a tip for the stadium person to hand it to you. WTF? It’s a constant barrage of what amounts to panhandling.
Restaurants love tipping because it pushes their cost of labor directly to the customer. Servers LOVE tipping because they make WAY more than they would on a straight wage.
None of this has ever made any sense. Percentage of the cost of a meal is a truly insane way of determining server pay. If I order iced tea for $3 and get it refilled 4 times, the server makes less than if I ordered a beer for $7 and they walk it to me once. If a buddy and I share a table, he orders a steak and I order a burger, why does the server get paid twice as much to bring him his plate? Why would I pay someone $20 to pop the cork on a nice bottle of wine I order off the menu?
All of this is just asinine and it’s becoming much more noticeable as the price of everything increases AND rhe “standard” percentage keeps getting pushed up.

restaurant and pub employees abroad seem to do fine without this culture, it's a "real" job and they are sometimes offended by people tipping them

Just raise prices, then give a cash discount.
They don't want cash. Even adults have a hard time counting change even if the register spits the coins out. It's also a fraud/theft risk. Reconciling cash drawers, etc., takes time, and time is money. But 3% on a $30 plate isn't exactly a crisis, either. Y'all want those Capital One points for your exotic trip to Cancun!

I agree eliminate tipping, but the crux of the problem is that waiters shouldn’t be making as much as they are. It’s insane that waiting tables can be a $100k job at nice places, or hot girl bartenders……
Restaurants wouldn’t have to raise prices 20% to pay a reasonable wage to their employees. Maybe it’s 5% or 10% and the servers get paid $20 an hour or something.

I'm fed up with gravity. Brings me down.

I will tip up to 20% for sit down excellent service. I am there to eat, not supplement a server’s wage. My tip is a “thank you.” If the bill is small, say $10/$20 or less, I may tip 50%. No tip for counter service. I think restaurants and the service industry were spoiled during lockdown. Time they are knocked back down to reality.

Theres some truth in this but its more the processors and not the credit card companies.

I tipped out of guilt at fast casual places for a while when they were grossly understaffed

was this communist Russia?
What kind of share the wealth kind of crap is that?
That's like working a sales job and having to share your commission with the other sales people. If that's how you want this to work, then this is what should happen to those that don't carry their own weight.

I went to Europe in October. No tipping was nice AF. The only place was even asked for a tip was the Jewish ghetto in Rome.

Tipping used to only be for exceptional service, now everyone wants one, but not everyone deserves one.

But it does fool people.
You look at the menu prices and say oh this is fine. Then your final bill is much more. If your final bill was the menu price, you'd go somewhere else.

I've been to Latin America many times, and alot of bars already add in gratuity. However, the service was always good.
