Gas, brake, and clutch in same orientation. Having to clutch with right foot and gas with left would have been much more difficult.

Those of us that grew up driving crappy cars appreciated the fact we could jump start our cars by parking on a hill or getting a push and then popping the clutch to start it. I'm genX by the way.

Gen X killed the manual transmission

bullshite.

I learned how to drive on a stick, as did my sister. I'm Gen X and she's borderline Gen X/Millennial. My first car was a stick. The car before my current one(Ford Focus) was a stick.

Everyone should learn how to drive w/a stick.

Now go frick yourself.

jeep is still carrying the torch. The gladiator I bought in June was several thousand dollars cheaper with the 6 speed.

if you know how to drive it’s not any more of a hassle in traffic than an auto and it’s 10x more fun to drive otherwise. As long as it stays available that’s all I’ll buy

Bought my son a manual 2018 Toyota 86 as a reward for college scholarships.

Also it seems like manual is more common than in Europe.

Ah yes.

A rite of passage. I learned w/my dad's 3 on the tree 1970 Ford F100. Thing had no power steering and drove like a fricking tank.

And it isn’t as hard as you are making it out to be.

I talked to a guy last night that got a Honda civic because it was one of the only cars he could still get in 5-speed. That sucks to hear although I'm fine with automatics from here on out.

I felt this in my soul

Except it was in a fox body mustang with a spec stage 3 clutch.

My dad took it a step further. Grew up out in farm country of the Midwest with big arse rolling hills and nothing but gravel roads. I couldn't go drive on my own until I could do a smooth start from a complete stop in an up hill starting position. This was a long bed s10, light as shite in the arse end, start in first gear, on a steep gravel incline, absolutely no spinning of the tires allowed, and no stalling.

Since then, I have always been able to jump in any stick shift and drive with ease, even with multiple year gaps in between.

Last week I traded in my ‘21 Mach 1 with a 6-speed Tremec manual for a ‘23 Vette, which is only available in auto. I miss that stick already.

thought it’d be fun to drive a manual overseas, until i realized that in many (most?) countries they have the steering wheel on the right side of the vehicle..

When pretending that you've been overseas goes wrong...

Americans probably shite themselves when they go to rent cars overseas and see a stick shift in it.

I rent cars overseas quite a bit. The manual doesn’t bother me, and my wife can drive them too, but she rents automatics, because we are generally driving in an unfamiliar area on the left side of the road and don’t need another complication.

Two things that tripped me up. I would automatically start driving on the wrong side of an empty road when pulling out of a parking lot etc. and have to catch myself. The other was traffic circles on a motorcycle.

I just don’t get the point. I guess there’s more room for your purse in this setup.

Nah, there’s still no room for anything that won’t fit in a cupholder in the Vette. That thing is fast as f#@k though. There’s actually a structural support that runs between the driver and passenger seats that contains all the gadgets, and that precludes the positioning of a stick shifter.

You might want to explain this statement. I learned on a 3 on the tree and my kids first vehicles bought we're mostly manual.

What's really annoying is some cars have the turn signal stalk on the left side of the steering wheel instead of the right.

Every car I have ever seen is this way.
