the temp in Memphis has dropped about 20 degrees in the last 4 hours.
We're suppose to be about the same today here in B'ham. It was in the mid-40's when I left the house this morning and by this afternoon supposed to drop into the low 30's with lows tonight in the 20's. Saturday is supposed to be nice with sunshine and a high of 50. After that though everything is going to shite.

No it was just before Christmas in '89.

I remember it even got bad enough they closed the school down there in Ketchikan
Unlike in Memphis where "there is a strong possibility of icing and snow so we are going to go ahead and call of schools, churches, pubic events, close the courts and oh yeah... GO TO THE KROGERS. EVERYONE. ALL AT THE SAME TIME".

I guess those styrofoam insulators are good enough for the outside faucets, right?
This will be the coldest weather since we moved into the house.

Yeah, I would think that they would be ok.

The prediction for Sunday in Minnesota is a low of -30 degrees. That will be as cold as it's been in 20 years. It will be much colder in northern Minnesota.
Sounds like now is a good time to move.

I'm from a small town in upstate New York famous for snowfall because of The Lake Effect. I can tell you that at 37 below zero, your nose hair can freeze and it feels like little knives on the inside of your nose. I can remember the locks freezing on the car door and my grandfather driving for two hours holding the door "shut" with his hand at 35 below and 12 foot snow drifts.

Not 89 cold for baton rouge or se LA. Back in Dec '89 we never even got above freezing one day and the low was 9 or 10 I believe.
Yeah, and a goddamn oil refinery exploded because of it!
(Note: Not sure if the Christmas eve explosion at Exxon was weather related. Just remember being a kid watching football and not looking forward to going to church downtown that afternoon when what appeared to be a nuclear bomb went off in our front yard)

Sweet Jesus...

That'll be chilly without all the ceilings and insulation in your crib. Better hope that shower faucet doesn't freeze up and bust.

As if the temperatures alone won't be cold enough, here is a link to a wind chill map valid next Tuesday (on page 29 a little over halfway down the page):

Should get down to 14F tonight where I'm at. About another 10F to go according to my outdoor weather gauge. Don't think I'll be going in to work tomorrow so I'm going to stay up and watch football and snow.
And drink a well chilled beer...
ETA: snow is starting right on time...

Meh, Accuweather says low of 18 Tuesday morning here, and warming up later in the week. That's cold, but not out of the ordinary for this time of year. Long range forecast has the rest of January slightly above normal.

Keep in mind that precipitation/snow forecast is from this morning through Monday morning so it includes today's snow in the Midwest. I do know there is supposed to be a low pressure wave traveling along the Arctic front Sunday/Monday so that accounts for a good bit of those totals.
"Accuweather"
Take their forecast with a major grain of salt. All they care about is the Northeast U.S. anyway
